October 28 2022 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 14:25 until 15:09 UTC. The skies are mostly cloudy with high clouds. I had planned to image in Ha with the SMII90 today but the clouds would have made it difficult so I opted for visual with the smaller instruments. The seeing is a bit above average and the temperature is 52F ( 11.1C )

SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x ( Ha )
I can see seven active regions in the 656.3nm Ha chromosphere today. Five of these are in the northern hemisphere with KSO showing two as numbered. The other two in the southern hemisphere both are numbered on the KSO images.

AR13131 in the NE quadrant shows itself as a spot with a plage immediately to it's east. AR13133 appears as a plage ENE of AR13131. A filament lies between both active regions. A bright unnumbered region just off the NE limb is easy to see. Suspecting that a minor flare is in progress there I check the SWL GOES X-Ray data and see that the solar X-Ray emission rose from B6 to B9 during that period and then started falling back afterwards. The KSO and GONG CTIO Ha images also show the region quite brightly during my observing time. The NW quadrant showed some slight brightening around some filaments. Clouds make this difficult to see.

AR13130 in the SW quadrant is seen as an easy plage with a filament above and below it. More filaments are seen well to it's SE. AR13132 is nothing more than a faint plage NNW of AR13130. A filament is glimpsed NNW of it. I see a scattering of filaments in the SE quadrant. KSO and GONG Ha images show a slight disturbance there in the chromosphere but I could not see it.

As far as prominences go I notice two on the SE limb. The southern one is a low " lump " with a thin projection leaning south. The one north of it has a sharp northern edge. Two more proms are seen on the NE quadrant. GONG CTIO gave me a better view of it than the scope did. A small floating prom is shown above the limb in the east on GONG CTIO but I did not notice it. Probably a cloudy moment. :-(

The ever-present mottles are visible.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
I can see seven areas of activity on the continuum WL photosphere today. Four in the northern hemisphere with two showing number labeling on the KSO images and three in the southern hemisphere with two of these showing labels.

AR13131 in the northeast quadrant shows itself by it's single large spot. It easily shows it's umbra-penumbra form. A small dark embedded pore is seen within the penumbra east of the umbra. AR13133 ENE of AR13131 shows itself as a zig-zag line of small spots and pores. Well SE of it lies a couple of small spots embedded in faculae. SDO HMI shows more than I can see here. Later I also notice a single pore SW of AR13131. SDOHMI continuum shows three more pores east of it that I cannot see. I see nothing in the NW quadrant.

AR13130 is seen as a small spot group in the SW quadrant that is surrounded by faculae with the faculae being easier to see southwest of the group. AR13132 is only visible by a single large pore though SDO HMI shows 3 additional pores in a facula SSW of it. I can see only a patch of faculae near the SE limb. I see nothing else in the SE quad.

The granulation can be seen in times of thinner cloud but clouds make it overall hard to see.

Happy Friday!! :hamster: 🍻

James

Aaron,
I am glad the clouds finally broke for you to allow you some solar time. I had clouds for most of the day, however coming home from work after midnight I notice mostly clear skies with Jupiter shining brightly. Mostly cloudy skies are predicted here tomorrow with rain late.

And you are welcome. I am glad you enjoy my session reports.

Goodnight.

James

Nice report James, the clouds broke for me near noon and grabbed some shots but haven’t had a chance to work on any of those shots. Today is supposed to be sunny so I’ll probably be doing a lot of processing tomorrow when rain is supposed to move in.

Warren, take advantage of it while you are still in sunshine. I have clouds so far today and it’s forecast to worsen as the day progresses. I may be lucky just to get a quick 8x32 bino view.
