AR3131 and 3135 broad band imaging.

Post by cte »

Hi everybody

Today it was again excepetionally warm in Italy, warmest october that I could ever remember. It felt like summer and seeing was very good, despite a local southwesterly breeze that at times was shaking the mount.

I tried imaging some sunspots with the mak at about F19, which will be slightly oversampling the theoretical resolution of the 180 mm Masutov with the small pixels of ASI 120 sensor. Nevertheless, this is the configuration I use for planet imaging, but I never tried that on the sun, since I think the local daylight seeing does not allow this.
Well, actually focusing was easy and the results are not bad I think. I shot at 29 fps (which is my maximum rate with the full camera CMOS), getting 2000-2500 frames, of which I stacked the best 20% with autostakkert. Processing was with registax (wavelet filters) Imppg for deconvolution and PS. I think the signal/noise was acceptable and that the photospheric granulation is very evident. Probably with a more modern camera and larger pixels like those of the ASI 174 the results would be more consistent. The fine umbral details of the lonely spot AR3131 can be well appreciated. G and R filter are probably sharper, but the blue filter puts more contrast on the granulation I think. I'm not sure how long can I keep recording without loosing the the details owing to the natural evolution of the photospheric structures. Normally I limit the length of the movie to less than 90 s but a longer acquisition would be probably beneficial, if nature allows that. I then moved to Ar3135, which was closer to the border, slightly more difficult due to the thicker solar atmosphere

Wish you a happy halloween !

Nice pictures. Bravo.

I do not look at the sky with the eyes of an astronomer, but of a person looking for the beauty of nature.

Well done. I know how hard it is to image WL on scales like this. Im using no more then 20 - 25s on wl solar structures, but i think the granules develop much slower. So should be fine with 90s. A fast camera is making a big difference though on this application and scale.

Thank you guys, thank tou for your advice Dennis. I will open my wallet and go with the asi 174 mm in the near future. Imx 432 sensor is even better for solar I think , but probably too specialized, pixels are really large. I think the 174 is good also for lunar/ planet imaging with my mak and a c9 that I keep at a different country location.

I can confirm, had the 174 myself and its a great camera. Yes, also more versatile then the Apollo Max. The 432 sensor is a complementing camera with its most interesting feature of the huge full well capacity.
