November Solar Challenge
I've had two identical requests for this month for the solar challenge, so great minds must think alike I'm always happy to accept requests so if you have one please let me know.
This month the challenge is to post 2 pictures (only 2 allowed).
The first being your absolute first solar image that you took
The second being the image you are most proud of (your very best)
Then we can enjoy your solar imaging journey
(please include equipment and date)

My history is very short, so the first one was created a few months ago. Not quite the first, but the first one I didn't trash.
The first was created on 06/18/2022, my most popular on 10/9/2022.

Re: November Solar Challenge
Hi,
I do not find my very first image but here the first image of the Sun I posted in the forum astroforo.net on January 21st 2008. Yes, I started during Solar minimum and it was not boring
Also the image of the equipment which is my double stacked Coronado SM60 on a Takahashi Sky 90 lurking through the window of the apartment where I used to live during my stay in Mexico City.
and the best achievement was on my Birthday day in 2010 in form of a video ...

Re: November Solar Challenge
Love this challenge! Can’t wait to see them all!
My first single (not stacked) image in WL was taken 22nd Dec 2018 with an iPhone 8 in an Orion SteadyPix Universal Smartphone Telescope Adapter clamped onto the 25mm eyepiece of a Celestron 6se which had a Celestron EclipSmart Solar Filter clipped to the front!
The image which is most important to me was taken 23rd June 2022 with a Skywatcher Evostar 80 ED DS Pro, Daystar Quark Prominence, UV/IR filter, ASI174MM, tilt adapter and a Celestron AVX. I'd yearned to image a filaprom with a non inverted disc but struggled for ages with processing, so this was a big achievement!
Onwards and upwards…

Re: November Solar Challenge
Great idea, Alexandra!
Unfortunately I lost my very first webcam images, but here's something taken not much later (April 2012). SW 150PL (150/1200 mm Newtonian), LifeCam HD5000 (converted webcam), Baader solar film:
And March 2022, currently the best what I could get out of my RC8/Lunt 50 mod (but stay tuned for the setup's improvements next year), Blackfly S (IMX 273):

Re: November Solar Challenge
The first is one with my third Quark, older images i cant find, it dates back to April 2019. I used a TS 102 ed F/7
Quark Chromosphere + 110mm D-ERF + ASI174mm. I can remember though when i started with (2017/18) this setup my very first images looked similar to Alexandras first image here.
The second one is what i consider one of my best H-alpha results up to today (09.10.2022). I got this old and used quark after i sold the brand new Quark #3 off on ebay. Only much later it turned out a way better etalon then i expected, thanks to this forum and tuning the temperature knob.

2010. Best image because it is the biggest solar thing I have caught on camera
2005. My first solar stacked image, using a modified Philips Toucam with a PST, K3CCDTools for capture and Registax. A huge leap from attempting afocal digital camera shots on a PST.

My first was for a partial eclipse 10/06/2021 that I wouldn't want to miss :
Astrosolaar 3.5 on APO 102 f/5 + barlow + ASI 178MC
But that day I didn't do only one picture but a lot for an animation:
My fav is an ISS transit shot on 29/06/2022 on Ha:
APO 102 f/5, barlow telecentric 3x, Daystar Quark chromo combo, ASI 178MM
I also did a video of it:

Re: November Solar Challenge
Hi everyone...
Great topic and love seeing all the contributions that you all have.
Now this has taken me on a trip down memory lane, as I found a lot of 'firsts' in my search. In light of the request for the first solar photo I found a old album of my early astronomical images and this FD WL image taken in 1979 with my first 35mm SLR (film) Camera taken through a 60mm, f11 Tasco refractor. Firm dates are not available, but it is sometime in the summer or fall I would expect as the camera was a Public School graduation gift. I took the above pic of the original with my phone, but it shows the crude early attempts at taking pics.
As for my very best, this is a hard one to choose...must be tens of thousands to choose from. I picked this mosaic of a set of AR's approaching the western limb, taken on February 17th 2014 with the Daystar Quantum filter mounted on the Celestron CR150 OTA. I can't really say why I chose this one, but it has stayed in my mind over they years as a level of detail to beat during the next solar maximum...time will tel if I pull it off
Now at this point I'm going to deviate form Alexandra's two image request, as I found a number of other firsts. My first digital solar image was taken on June 8, 1994 through the same 60mm refractor using a TC211 chipped camera...exact model escapes me, but the pair of images show an AR approaching the limb: The next 'first' was a UV filtered full disk image taken on August 8th, 2002 through a Celestron C102 (102mm, f10) refractor with an SBIG 237 CCD camera: My venture into Ha imaging started at a star party in 2004, where a fellow next to our campsite had a 40mm Coronado scope set up (not a PST) and allowed me to collect my first images through his scope. This was on August 21st, 2004 with the same ST237 camera: July 6th 2006 saw my first light with a DSLR...a Canon 350D on the C102 scope and a Thousand Oakes class solar filter: I was surprised to find this one...first from a limited number of jet transits. This was captured on November 4th, 2008 through the C102 OTA and Lumenera Infinity 2-1 CCD camera: Now, the last 'first' is my first image of a solar eclipse at maximum. This was taken during the annular eclipse on May 10th, 1994, again with the Canon 350D and C102 OTA: I was not able to find a sketch book that I used prior to getting my first 35mm camera, but there would have been solar sketches starting around 1976 when I first bought the Tasco 60mm scope (I still have it).
Thanks for taking the time to go re-visit the past with me, it's been fun
Brian

So many excellent images in this post! Turi, Brian, your film camera shot are a piece of history!
Her are my first one, dated June 2013, and my favorite, because of the nice prominence evolution rather than the image overall quality
Both with a Lunt 60mm

Re: November Solar Challenge
Hi All,
Here is my first H-alpha image taken July 31 2021 with a quark, ST80 (60mm aperture), and an ancient olympus microscope color camera. I had to capture in NIH ImageJ and write macros to debayer the image because the drivers weren’t working correctly…
And here’s my current favorite taken on Sept 8th 2022 with a 127mm f9.4, quark+Lunt 40mm double stack and ZWO ASI174 monochrome camera.

Re: November Solar Challenge
The color camera captures the natural Ha color wonderfully. It's something familiar to every visual solar observer. The second image is several steps beyond the first. Nice near natural coloration too!

Re: November Solar Challenge
Howdy, My name is Peter and I live in Queensland, Australia.
This is my first post on SolarChat and I thought the November Solar Challenge is as as good a place as any to start!
So here is my first Solar image of a hedgerow Prominence from July 4th 2020 with my single stack Lunt 60mm and ZWO 120MM. A more recent inverted image taken on November 19th this year with my single stack Lunt 80mm and ZWO 432MM. I have had great mentoring from several members whom I see are also here on SolarChat (thank you big time!) with my main interest in Solar animations, you can see some of them on my Astrobin page below.
I am really looking forward to being part of and contributing this forum as we head to the next Solar Max.
Thanks so much,
Best,
Peter

Peter,
Those prominences look really good in your image. Looking back at my observational records I recorded them as fairly faint visually.

Re: November Solar Challenge
Hello everybody: this turned out to be a great thread ! Sorry for coming late to the party...
First is one of my solar images taken with a Solarmax II 60mm BF5 mounted on a simple photographic tripod. The camera was an ASI120MM: clearly I could not keep the disk in the center of the frame Oh well ! I was very proud of it as it was one of the first times I was able to capture the sun AND some of its features. Taken March 2014.
The second one is a closeup of AR12786: hopefully shows I made some progress since 2014. This was taken in 2020 with the HaT 203mm scope at f/27 with a Quark combo.
