November 3 2022 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 15:00 until 16:00 UTC. The skies are mostly clear with just below average seeing. The temperature is 61F ( 16.1C )

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x and 50x ( Ha )
I can see six specific regions of activity within the 656.28nm Ha chromosphere with three numbered ones shown on the KSO images in the north but it must be said that a band of plage with areas of varying visibility/brightness crosses the northern hemisphere from northeast to northwest at mid-northern latitudes. This is not difficultly seen at all visually and the GONG and KSO images show it well too. AR13131 in the NW quad is a brighter area of plage with a spot with another brighter section of plage just east of it. A fine filament SSW of AR13131 shows a brightening under it too. AR13155 just west of the CLM is a spot among scattered plage. AR13137 is seen in the NE quadrant as just a small fairly bright plage with a filament to it's NE. Another brighter area of plage is seen to it's SE. A fair number of filaments are seen in the northern hemisphere within this band of plaginess being most noticeable in the NE quadrant. Larger filaments are seen north of this band. The southern hemisphere easily shows two plages with a third hard to discern disturbance in the SW quadrant. KSO shows only one with a label. AR13136 in the SE quadrant. A magnificent filament is seen SSE of it. The SW edge of the filament is fairly sharp edged and darker than the more tenuous NE portion. I can see some detail within the filament in the form of mottling and striations. Another plage ( unnumbered on KSO ) is seen just west of the Central Longitudinal Meridian in the south. Filaments are seen west of it amid a slight disturbance in the chromosphere and a polar crown of filaments are seen in the far south with the easternmost one begins as a prominence making it a filaprom!

I viewed two prominences. A nice one on the NE limb which appears visually as it does in the GONG CTIO Ha image and another smaller broad conical prom is seen on the SE limb.

Celestron NexStar 102 GT w/Altair wedge and Baader 540nm filter. 55x ( WL )
I can see six spot-bearing regions on the 540nm photosphere today. Three of these are numbered in the northern hemisphere on the KSO images and only one numbered one is seen in the southern hemisphere.

Three regions are seen in the NE quadrant. A spot is seen almost at the limb! West of it lies a patch of faculae with a group of small pores just west of the faculae. I cannot resolve all the pores visually as seen on the SDO HMI image. NW of this small pore area lies AR13137 and it's seen as a spot with a pore to it's SW. A facula is seen to it's NE. AR13135 just across the CLM in the NW quadrant shows itself as two spots. A larger spot that shows both umbra and penumbra with the smaller spot to it's east. The umbra of the western spot narrows down on it's east side. I see no nearby pores at all. AR13131 nearing the NW limb is a structured spot with an appendaged umbra. The penumbra has a gap or thinning in it's SSE side below the umbral appendage. Faint faculae surround the spot and another facula can be seen SSW of AR13131.

AR13136 in the SE quadrant can only be seen as a small spot with a couple of pores nearby. Low contrast patches of faculae can be seen near both the SE and SW limb.

The fine granulation of the solar disc can be made out.

Carpe Diem!

Great report James! That NE prom had quite a bit of activity in it today.

I am much cloudier here today than yesterday but still will get a continuum observation. Good luck on a cloud-free weekend everyone.

Sorry Alexandra. Clouds seem to like weekends don't they?
