Pedro,
These are all really nice. Which do you prefer, the 4x TV PowerMate or the 2x Zeiss Abbe' barlow? You appear to be getting in just as close and with as much detail using the barlow as you are using the PowerMate.

A friend of mine won't even consider a barlow against a PowerMate. Are they that much difference between them? Especially if a high quality barlow is used like your Zeiss or a TeleVue barlow. I think you have the TV BIG barlow too!?

I can tell little difference if any between the quality of your Zeiss Vs the TV PowerMate. Both are excellent. I usually use my Meade Coronado CeMax or Celestron Ultima 2x barlows. They seem to do fine.

The biggest difference I see between the PowerMates and the typical barlow is magnification. Most barlows are 2x. PowerMates can be purchased to 5x.

Thanks guys

James, I use powermates most of the time (X4 & X5). These are great and there is no big difference between good quality barlows and powermates. The ASI174MM is better for HR images (it records more images/s). The Zeiss Abbe' Barlow is the best in the market with a high price tag

At the end of the day it all depends on seeing

No big difference. Have you seen any barlows with more than 2x power? I have seen a few 2.5x but never more, at least that I can remember. The magnification range alone makes the PowerMates very useful. Still, my barlows perform well. What's the design difference between the PowerMates Vs the typical barlow? Is the PowerMate an apochromatic barlow?

Seeing always rules...

Great images, Pedro. The weather here is awful so no chance of seeing the new sunspots myself for a while.

Pedro,

First - great pictures as usual!

Also, I'm wondering if you could please comment on your experience with the ASI174 vs the Grasshopper. I currently have that same Grasshopper model and am thinking about getting an ASI174, mainly for the higher frame rate.
Do you image at 8 bit, or higher? Does the ASI174 framerate drop off a lot at higher bit depth (such as "16 bit" mode in Firecapture)?
I'm also thinking about the FLIR Blackfly BFS-U3-28S5M-C (IMX421), which has essentially the same pixel/sensor size as that Grasshopper but a CMOS sensor with 130 fps. Do you have any knowledge of that?

Thanks very much for your time!
Kevin

Lovey set of images Pedro!

Kevin, do you have any other cameras? The 174 with its large pixels is only really suitable for long focal length applications. I have the FLIR version of the 174 and it drops frames in FC when I run in 16 bit. Whilst I don't have personal experiernce of the 421the specs of it look good.

Mark,

Thanks for the feedback - your advice is appreciated! For solar I have only the Grasshopper ICX674. I like it a lot but would like to try something with a higher frame rate. This initially led me to consider the Blackfly IMX421 (with essentially the same pixel/sensor size). But the 174 also seems like a reasonable possibility. I almost always image with a 2.5x or 4x Powermate and Halpha (Lunt f/7 THa100), so the 174 pixel size seems like it would work pretty well, maybe even a bit better than the 421(??).
I'm guessing the reason you chose the FLIR version of the 174 is so you didn't have to use USB power for the camera??

Kevin

Thanks Kevin

I only use the ASI174MM for HR (X4, X5 powermates and Daystar Quark). The bigger pixels are great for the long focal lengths. I always image in 8Bits, As Mark mentioned he 174 and it drops frames in FC when I run in 16 bits. Most of the times I use the grasshoppers, CCDs and much better than CMOS.

Hope this helps

Pedro,

Thanks for your comments! If I could trouble you with one more question, can you elaborate on your comment of CCD vs CMOS?

Thanks again!

Hi Kevin

I prefer CCD versus CMOS. The former have better dynamics and less noise. You can find lots on info on the net regarding CCD versus CMOS
