Sunlit, 10 to 13 Nov 2022, Animation of Mars' North Polar Hood evolution

Post by H-Alpha »

Hi all,

Although it is time for Sun with these nice, large AR's, I am still absorbed by the Red Planet until its coming opposition (shortly). I really missed the sun and I am eager to return to it soon.

I am preparing the map of the entire planet, but those last days I was impressed by the speed of change in the Northern Polar Hood of Mars, so made the following animation from the 10th, 11th and 13th of November (I also made captures the 12th, but clouds did not allow to have the very same "face" of Mars.

Hope you like it. :-)

Kevin, I had not the opportunity of planet occupational so far and when I heard about it, I wanted so much to capture it. In addition it is close to Mars opposition! Unfortunately, when I looked for it, I read the following:

"On this occasion, the occultation will be visible from Athens. It will begin with the disappearance of Mars behind the Moon at 07:16 EET, though In twilight and at a low altitude of only 4.0 degrees, in the north-western sky. Its reappearance will be visible at 07:43 EET, though In daylight and at a low altitude of -0.6 degrees. "

Very low... Not even visible from my place at only 4 degrees. Nevertheless, if the sky is clear, I will try to photograph both the Moon and Mars very close to each other, much earlier, when there will be higher in the sky.

Best wishes,
Alexandros

This reminds me of my view through my 6"F8 Criterion back in 1988. I could see two of the Tharsis volcanoes. One was Olympus Mons and I cannot remember the other though I have it recorded. Either clouds or ice at their summits made them easier to see in the scope.

The polar hood is probably caused by melting water ice or sublimating dry ice.

Stunning view Alexandros!!

James

P.S. When is Mars at opposition? I haven't been following it. It's gotta be close.

Excellent again H-alpha.

Someone tell NASA they are wasting money sending probes and satellites to Mars. Just outsource all the work to this man !

Excellent work as per usual, Alexandros.

Have done a few visual observations of Mars over the last few weeks (getting close to opposition, so ideal time). Definitely a very fun target when the conditions are right.
