waiting for sun

Post by Bastelhannes »

Sigh.. waiting for sun...

Maybe it helps a bit to point the scope to the position of the sun. Maybe the clouds will disappear.

But as you can see.. the balcony is wet.

I was just trying the new setup: Sol'ex, ASI178MM, NEAF-Focuser, Mele §Q mini PC, self printed solar finder and a decoated Skywatcher 705 PDS (you can see the light going through the main mirror.

Just a bored posting.. nothing serious...

That's a real positive point of view.
Beautiful setup, hope you see the sun soon.

That is what I call persistence

Have you tried adding a Laser in order to melt down the clouds ?

No.. not a laser.. we are close to an old airport. I am still trying to abuse the microwave oven. Until now I got at least some crispy doves... quite tasty.

Interesting setup, does this uncoated newton work well for h-alpha imaging? Are both mirrors uncoated or just the main?

I actually saw some sunshine today.

BUT! It was 4C/40F and blowing a 20m/s {45mph] SE gale!

I never saw that amazing AR3140 spot group. Not even once! :(

I decoated just the main mirror, this is enough. It works like a charm, at least for the SHG (spectroheliograph).

ZWO and Touptek announced cameras with IMX990 or IMX991 sensors. They are claiming it would be possible to see through the clouds. For that amount of money I would just travel to a nice island close to Bermuda...

I will be interested to see your results as this is what I want to do with an old Newt and use the Sol'Ex with it.
Weather wise though I can feel your pain,I will have clear skies until I open the roof of the observatory then the clouds race in and just sit there covering the sun for the rest of the day

Then there is all the night kit which is far too long a list to write up here!

The results are very nice with the decoated mirror. But.. (a big but) .. I never compared the results with a different setup with same seeing conditions. Maybe i put some aluminum foil back on the mirror to replace the missing coating. Then i just pull it off to compare it without.

Sorry, just being silly...

(Maybe i need to setup a comparison.. I am building up a second Sol'ex for demo purposes.

Newt with coated mirror not a good idea even with aluminium foil,I have a six inch f/5,an eight inch f/6 and a 10 inch f/4 which I would be happy to rip the coating off and use as a solar newt. I am interested to see your results in the CaK line if you have any images, did you remove the coating yourself ?

Ehm? Why is it a step forward? I am confused. I thought the french guys already did a lot before me?

The fluid to remove the coating is sodium hyperchloride soluted in water...

Hi Karsten, as far as I know, you are the only one to try a Newtonian with a Solex. Didn't you post some nice results with this telescope previously?

I think the more common fluid for removing the aluminium coating is ferric chloride (used for removing copper from printed circuit boards). Remember to neutralise with sodium bicarbonate before disposal.

Break

Post by Bastelhannes »

Hi folks,

I am taking a break from public and from solar astronomy.

Working in this business has shown terrible things to me. It feels like people are creating their own reality and insult the others. Corporations are nothing worth. I am starting to lose my belief in myself and therefore need to get a bit of distance.

The projects will be delayed or stopped. I am not working for the shop anymore, therefore my sources are very limited now. I can only use the things, which will stay at my home.

Be safe and stay strong!

Karsten
