November 18 2022 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

My session time is from 16:50 until 17:34 UTC. The skies are clear with well below average seeing. The temperature is 45F ( 7.2C )

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS 16x and 25x ( Ha )
I can see at least nine active regions in the Ha chromosphere today! Five of these are in the northern hemisphere with three of these being NOAA labeled. Four are seen in the southern hemisphere with two being shown with NOAA labels.

An easy plage is seen in the NE quadrant fairly close to the limb. It's associated with AR13149. Well west of this is a low contrast unnumbered plage just east of the CLM. A small filament is located in it's NE corner. WSW of it a considerable distance lies the brightest plage on the disc. The very easily seen AR13150. Smaller more difficult plages are seen NE and SE of it. The NE one is AR13146. A half polar crown is seen in the far NW. Small prominences are seen on the NE and western limb.

The SW quadrant shows two low contrast plages. Neither show number labeling on SM or SWL images. Two filaments lie below the plage nearest the limb. I also can see a thin filament just west of disc's center. A crown of filaments is difficultly seen very close to the southern limb. Two, maybe three active regions are seen in the SE quadrant. AR13148 is the southernmost of these and shows itself as a plage. An easy filament lies just to it's east and shows a brightened area beneath it. A small but easy prominence lies on the limb nearby. NW of AR13148 lies two small filaments. I can see some plage there too. NE of AR13148 lies AR13147. I see it as a spot framed by filaments to it's east. The plage is not very noticeable but appears as more of a disturbance in the chromosphere.

The mottles are visible today.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 41.5x ( WL )
I can only see six areas of activity on the continuum photosphere today. Two labeled ones in the northern hemisphere and three in the southern hemisphere, two labelled.

AR13149 in the NE quadrant is visible only as a spot and a barely visible pore. Faint faculae can be seen too. AR13150 in the NW quadrant is visible as a group of a half-dozen tiny spots and pores.

AR13147 in the SE quadrant is visible as a spot with a trailing pore. The spot looks like it has an umbra with a projection or an umbralet to it's east. hard to see. A penumbra surrounds them. Faculae lie east of the spot and pore. I can see a small spot marking the position of AR13148 SW of AR13147. SDOHMIc shows a couple of small pores very close to it that are invisible to my eye. A large low contrast patch of faculae is seen in the SW quadrant.

The fine granulation can only be glimpsed today.

Happy Friday!! :hamster:

James

P.S. The bright region I was seeing in the NW quadrant was AR13150 not AR13146 which is a smaller area just to the NE of AR1315. I corrected it in the post.

That's great James :hamster: I thought the disc would be quiet now the big ones have gone but all these little ones have sprouted out.

Yes, Alexandra. Ha is still surprisingly active. White light however is still relatively quiet.

I'll post today's session shortly.

Great post James,I admire your visual skills. If I was to attempt visual solar observing ,I'd last about 5 mins before I would cook in the Australian sun.

Thanks Martin. I guess you image remotely?

It was AR13150 that was the prominent AR in the NW quadrant. Not AR13146.

Good report James! I might be able to get an hour of sun soon.

I hope you have succeeded. I am under a very milky sky today an I am letting my scope acclimate to the temperature outside before using it.

Just a brief view with the sunoculars. The trees on my southern horizon seem to have grown quite a bit this year and the sun is gliding through them until next year now. The sunoculars give a bit more freedom to find a 'gap'.

I am laughing at my typo stating I did not let my scope acclimate. It had to be auto-correct. I did let it acclimate and corrected the post.

The SUNoculars are excellent. They are so versatile. They would make good Christmas gifts for anyone interested in observing the Sun. I am sure if I lived in Canada, Great Britain or much of Europe I would use them even more than I do here because of the brief viewing time north of the 45th parallel and the low altitude of the Sun there. If I had one hour of daylight in Sweden or Norway it would probably be seen with the SUNoculars most of the time.

Goodnight and Good morning Mark.
