Some images and animations from a chilly morning! 11/19/2022

Post by rigel123 »

I told myself yesterday that I probably would not set up this morning because of the forecast for cold weather. Then I got up, saw the sun and threw caution to the wind! And I mean wind, 22F/-5.5C with a breeze and gusts to 15mph, it was chilly! So the animations are only 20 minutes long each but luckily seeing was better than what Astrospheric predicted it would be. The animation of the SW limb has AR3150 in it but a brighter flare occurred just south of the AR with a nice eruptive filament rising out of it. The 2nd animation is of the NE Limb with what I titled "Wind Blown Proms" Appropriate, right??? :D First the stills:

WoW, you were MUCH colder than I was today. I was at 48F during my observing session which I still have to post. All of your work today looks really nice but I notice the small flare in the first animation throwing out ejecta. Nice catch!

Well, it was well worth it for us that you went out into the cold today. Terrific animations.

Thanks James and Jordan! It’s supposed to be clear again tomorrow and colder yet, we’ll see how brave I am tomorrow! Indeed James, that little spot of flare and ejecta wasn’t even in an identified active region!

Superb animations and pictures.

Aaron,
Oak leaf transits!! I have those but they don't hurt visual observing too much. Now if you can image an acorn transit of the Sun that would be impressive!! Maybe a SPOD!!

Thanks all for the comments! Leaf transits can definitely be an issue Aaron, recently I was seeing tons of Starling transits!

Thanks Maurits and Alexandra! I thought yesterday was cold, it was 17F/-8.3C this morning, less wind but my BF heater could not keep up so no chance for any lengthy imaging today!

It's strange that the Coronado blocking filters do not seem to be affected as much by the cold. I went down to 18F last year and still was able to observe without issue.

I should have saved the animation I did catch just to show how the contrast just disappears. It’s like watching filaments fade away.
