November 22 2022 SUNocular Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Today I am under a largely overcast sky of varying cloud thickness. It's probably 90 percent overcast. I did catch a few thin areas in the cloud to peer through and one small clear gap between 17:00-17:15 UTC using my versatile Lunt 8x32 WL SUNoculars. The temperature is 51F ( 10.5C )

I can see three areas of activity on the small white light solar disc. AR13149 in the northern hemisphere on the CLM shows itself as two side by side easy spots. AR13147 in the southern hemisphere just west of the Central Longitudinal Meridian is seen as a very easy dark spot. Just east of it across the meridian I see two smaller more difficult spots marking the position of AR13151.

Overall I see five spots on the disc. The small image below gives a good representation of what I can see through the Sunny-Oculars. :-) The larger image of course gives a better would-be telescopic view.

Aaron,
Your AT50 has got to be a physically tiny scope for my AR72EDII is quite small. I am sure it's ultra-portable. Do you use a wedge with the AT50 or a filter for white light? Filters would be really inexpensive for such a small scope. Binocular filters would probably work!

Titus is adorable! Fuzzies, ( That's what I often call cats ) make wonderful companions and friends and make good observing buddies too!! :cat

Will Titus let you give him a belly rub!? Mine do. Many cats won't.

James

P.S. Cats usually do bring me cheer and make me smile and he's a cute one.

Great report James, your representation of the Sunocular view is bang on :hamster: today I got another little solar gadget in the post, a little portable spectrometer. I hope to be able to see the Fraunhofer lines, this should work on a cloudy day. We will see, I'll hope for some blue sky tomorrow to try it out.

The little cat is cute too :cat

Aaron,
It the AT50 an ED/APO scope or a standard achromat? I have never seen an ED instrument with a cemented doublet for an objective. My first scope was a 50mm F12 that had a cemented doublet.

Titus loves the warmth! Our cats, especially Lily likes to lay in front of the fireplace when I have it lit and yes she gets belly rubs there too!

I would love to have a portable spectrometer.

It didn't cost that much, only the same price as the Sunoculars (well half the Sunocular price).

Aaron,
I could not find an AT50 or an AT80 achromat on Astronomic's website at all. They do make an AT80ED. In fact I could not find any achromatic scopes by Astro-Tech at all. All are ED instruments. How long have you had yours? It looks like they have jumped completely to ED/APO scopes since you bought yours.

Titus looks really attentive here!

Goodnight. I've had a really busy day at work. I am so glad I am off tomorrow.

Aaron,
That AT102EDT should be a great scope. I may get an AT130EDT in the future for those few days of good seeing that I occasionally have. The AT80ED should be a nice scope!

Enjoy Thanksgiving and did you take Titus with you? You could have taken the AT50 too. It's very portable.

Aaron,
I ate Thanksgiving dinner at the scope this afternoon. Turkey and gravy, dressing, corn and mashed potatoes. We are having our bigger dinner at my stepson's on Saturday. And when I came back inside I fed our cats some turkey. They are picky though and didn't eat much of it but loved the gravy! Titus is so fluffy he looks like a plush toy!

I did get an observation in. I am due for an imaging session. I usually don't image as much in the winter as I do in the summer.
