December 24 2022 Observations. A very cold white light day!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

My session time was between 14:35 until 15:00 UTC. Clear skies with poor seeing. The weather is a very cold 9F ( -12.7C ), even colder than yesterday. Last night's low here in Edneyville N.C. was 0F ( -17.7C ). The predicted high for today is 24F ( -4.4C )

Due to having a busy day planned and also due to the anticipated poor seeing and very cold weather I chose to do only white light today. 25x gave the best view in the horrible seeing with 41.5x barely improving the view in moments of slightly better seeing.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 41.5x ( WL )
I can see five active regions on the WL photosphere today. Three numbered ones in the northern hemisphere and two numbered ones in the southern hemisphere. ( KSO )

AR13173 shows itself in the far NE as a spot with a barely visible patch of faculae to it's east. Just east of the CLM in the NE quadrant AR13171 shows a sizeable spot, however even with it's size I can only barely see that it displays umbra-penumbra structure. The seeing is that bad and before my observations began I allowed 30min for my scope to equalize to the cold weather! Across the CLM into the NW quadrant I can easily see two spots associated with AR13169. I can see the umbra-penumbra form in the larger lead spot with difficulty but not at all in the following spot. During moments of slightly better seeing I can barely see a couple of larger pores east of the trailing spot.

AR13168 is visible as a small spot in the SW quadrant. I can barely make out faculae west of the spot. The SE quadrant shows only a small spot belonging to AR13172.

The attached GONG WLAI image gives a better view than I could see.

Merry Christmas Everyone!!

James

I hope the weather warms up for you soon (unless of course you like the festive weather) :) I enjoyed the WL sunocular view yesterday and could clearly see the large active regions in the north.

Have a wonderful Christmas James :hamster:

Hi James!

Merry Christmas and thanks for the report. Hazy skies here on Christmas day, have had the sunoculars out and got some nice views of the sun. Hope you weathered the bad weather you've just had. Sat by the fire here slowly cooking lamb for later on.

Mark

Alexandra,

I have considered getting a sunocular for getting me through winter days, but have somewhat shaky hands. Are yours hand-held or do you mount them on a tripod? What brand of sunoculars would you recommend. Suggestions from others of are also encouraged.

Thanks and welcomes everyone. Merry Christmas. A white Christmas would have been nice but the snow missed us and went well to the north. It was certainly cold enough though.

Jordan,
I would certainly recommend the Lunt 8x32 SUNoculars. They are robust and well made. They also make a much cheaper 6x30 pair but they are not as robustly built. If you have shaky hands don't go above 8x hand-held. Unfortunately the 8x32 Lunts don't have a place to mound a tripod but Mark found a nice one with a head that clamps around the binos for a secure fit. Maybe he will post an image of it here so you can see it.

SUNoculars would have made an excellent Christmas gift!!

Happy Holidays.

James

Welcome. Clouds have nearly thwarted me today but the 8x32 Lunt's rescued the day!
