OMG the sun is out 1/4/2023

Post by rigel123 »

So happy to see the sun despite the gusty winds and poor seeing at the time of captures 16:00 - 16:30 UTC. Just happy to grab some images with the Lunt LS60T DS for Ha and the Orion ED80T with the Lunt wedge and BF1200 CaK module. ASI174MM and I also got to try (very quickly) my new ASI ADC to see how it handled NR's, and in a very quick evaluation it looks like it does a great job as described earlier by others. I just barely had enough back focus with the 3X Meade Barlow. Will enjoy giving it a much better test when I set up my EQ mount and have time to really play with it.

Nice disks Warren! I never realised you had a problem with Newtons rings previously.

Beautiful full disks Warren! ZWO ADC for Newton rings seems to work nicely.

Nice images. I noticed the ZWO ADC as well. I notice the CaK image the most. I hope you don't mind if I play with it a bit.

You imaged just before a nice flare today. I didn't get it by my personal instruments because of clouds but I did get good data on it via GONG, the SDO and the GOES satellite. I'll post that data shortly. And I did get a quick WL SUNocular view late between clouds and through trees after the flare had ended.

Thanks Mark, Petrus, James and Brian!
Mark, typically I only get them at times with the barlow and are noticeable in animations and never had much luck with the tilter. I read about some folks having success with this so figured I would give it a try. The real test will be an animation of the surface. They have never been awful like some I have seen, but I notice them from time to time.

James, play away with the CaK

Brian, I feel your pain, it seems like forever since I had a chance to catch the sun!

Great imaging Warren. Yes, I noticed the ADC as well and was wondering about that. A friend of mine lent me his Daystar Interference eliminator and it wins hands down over the 2 tilters I have tried. Very simple and effective...not cheap!

Great images Warren!
Must be great to have finally got a bit of sun action.
The ADC set up is interesting. We don't quite understand how it is solving the NR issue or how you set it up for this application.
For our planetary work we use an ADC all the time. It is usual to run the ADC after the barlow as it likes higher focal ratios. To solve back focus issues the barlows often used are telecentric. With the set up the ADC is rotated to be horizontal to the horizon which isn't the case in your picture but as it is not doing atmospheric dispersion correction this obviously doesn't matter. How do you set the levers for this set up?

Thanks everyone!

Nice color James!

I cracked up at the comb over comment Alexandra! That polar prom has been fun to watch develop in other images posted.

Hey Clare and Peter, I read a discussion from a number of years ago here on Solar Chat about using the ADC and just got one and threw it on not knowing what I was really doing! And on a manual alt/az to boot! I simply looked at the image and played with the levers in various positions until I didn’t notice any hint of NR's. I still noticed a variance in the brightness on the surface to a point but that may have come from awkwardly using the manual slow motion controls to keep the sun in the FOV while fiddling with the levers and not being in the center of the sweet spot. Oh, and while clouds were going over too! I can’t wait to give it a real test when I have a tracking mount set up and can spend time getting it oriented correctly and the view centered correctly as well! Here is a link to that discussion: viewtopic.php?t=21128

Oh no, if i knew that the ZWO ADC can help for NR i then just will go with Player One camera, i bought the ZWO version because they included a tilt adapter with it for free so i can use it with my other previous ZWO camera, but if i knew about ADC then i already have that and then i can start to buy Player One cameras instead of ZWO.

Yes, but i liked the Player One design more, i even prefer their built-in tilter, but it is late now, i can live with it, only i can try and buy another camera for planetary from Player One then.
