12th February - Monthly Zoom Solarchat ***Now with link***
I'm very excited to share with you that Tom Bridgeman who works for NASA will be joining us for the February monthly Zoom chat. Mark this date in your diary now!
Here is the link:
Topic: Solarchat Monthly Hangout on Zoom
Time: 12th February 18:00 UTC
Join Zoom Meeting
https://us02web.zoom.us/j/5813691822
Meeting ID: 581 369 1822
Passcode: 21122112
He is currently the primary heliophyisics visualization person working at the SVS and this is an example of some of the things he does
https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/search/?nasa_ ... &people=12
His questions for us are, what would we like him to cover in a short presentation and do you have any burning questions you would like to ask about the SDO data?
Please let us know as soon as possible so that we can get back to him.
Thanks Shawn (SJohnson) for making this happen
Alexandra

Re: 12th February - Monthly Zoom Solarchat
Something I have wondered has to do with with the phenomenon we saw last week with the X1 flare that occurred but was preceded by smaller eruptions starting on the west limb that progressed to the big flare and are these events related or just an amazing coincidence since they occurred in a sequence.

Re: 12th February - Monthly Zoom Solarchat
Really looking forwards to this Sol Chat Zoom. Here is a link to an animation I made back on the 18th November 2022 of the region around AR3147. My question is that there appears to be an interaction/connection with the bright flare in AR3147 and another at the same time to the West. Is this coincidence or can (and how) a flare cover such a huge distance which I estimated to be around 150000km (near the diameter of Jupiter)?

Re: 12th February - Monthly Zoom Solarchat
Hi Alexandra,
Any image processing tips from Tom would be more than welcome, if he can share anything with us?
My question is, are there any pro/am collaboration opportunities with NASA’s solar physics team that we can contribute to? I wonder if our hi-res images of the chromosphere, or photosphere, might be of any scientific value in addition to their own data.
Stu.

Re: 12th February - Monthly Zoom Solarchat ***Now with link***
I really enjoyed the meeting. Tom was great at his presentation on the meeting. I am very grateful to Tom and NASA for making data from their various missions available to the general public where we can access it. Like Alexandra stated SDO is very valuable to our observing programs. I was also really pleased that he brought up HelioViewer. It's a great viewing and editing tool for SDO, SOHO, Hinode etc data. I just wish they could integrate the NSO GONG data into it.
I really like the idea of NASA being able to access our data. As Tom said, Amateur astronomers are among the few in amateur STEM fields that can still provide useful data to the professional community.
James
P.S. Invite Tom to join the SolarChat forum!
