An interesting day 17 January 2023

Post by Averton »

The weather was forecast to be getting hot from early on today with strong northerly winds. What wasn't also mentioned was all the clouds that also showed up to the party! Our normal practice is to check the current images on-line to orientate our captures correctly. In Australia we have this wonderful privatised organisation called NBN (National Broadband Network). Ever since it's implementation in our area it has been the most unreliable bit of infrastructure you could imagine. This morning was no exception, with simply no connection. It was interesting to see just how reliant we have become on such services as we both sat there thinking well what do we do now. Suffice it to say that the North indication on these images is just that, an indication - plus or minus 15 degrees should do it :)
Dodging the clouds was the next challenge, so we went for 540nm and 393nm instead of Ha. After quite a few failed captures we eventually managed full disks and some closeups. This was the next point of fun, as the wind gusts were so strong that the sun spots were moving out of the FOV with the gusts. These videos really gave AutoStakkert a challenge.
Eventually there was enough of a break to capture a full disk in Ha as well. By this time it was definitely hot and even windier so it was time to retire.

Hi Clare & Peter, when NBN in our house is mentioned in our house its usually preceded with a swearword. What I do for orientation with my camera is place a small sticker at the correct orientation so I can line the USB cable socket up with it.
What filters are you using for your Cak? It is very sharp.

Great shots despite what you had to battle! Interesting Martin, the orientation of your cable looks like where I have mine when imaging and then I flip the image in Firecapture so East is on the left due to the diagonal.

Glad we are not the only ones with a bodgy version of the NBN.
Thanks for the orientation tip. We do a similar thing but find aligning on the screen more accurate and easier (with two people) when possible.
The filter is an Antlia 3nm one.

Thanks Warren :)
It's all good fun, better than not having a chance to image at all.

Averton,
Your 540nm images are nice and crisp. Love em’! And I really like the 393nm images too. I am always interested in those. The Ha image looks good as well.

James.
