Last solar eclipse in a frame.

Post by Sergio Alessandrelli »

Hi to all.
Finally I resumed the last solar eclipse in a single image. At the beginning weather wasn't so good but then clouds opened and I was able to shot the all the partial eclipse with my full setup (white, calcium and H-alpha light).

Bye ;)

Beautiful images, Sergio. Quite a setup you have: can you tell us a bit about your scopes and mount ?

Hi

My setup is composed by a William Optics FLT132 equipped with a SolarSpectrum SO1 0,5A for the chromosphere in H-Alpha (Baader ERF and TZ4). For the Calcium chromosphere I use the same refractor or in that case a smaller Zeiss 63/840 refractor objective lens assembled by the Starworks, and a Lunt Calcium module. On both the OTA I use two Basler with the IMX174 mono sensor that I can read in parallel using two instance of Genika. White light was made with an old MTO1000 lens and a mylar filter on a reflex camera. The mount is an Avalon MUNO guided with the Hinode. I'm happy with my setup and I have a lot to study to improve my technique. I also have a project to adapt an old 7" rumak for the sun, but it's still a work in progress ;)

Sergio,
That's a very nice collection of images from the last solar eclipse. Very nice setup too. The mount looks very well made.

We use Basler cameras in the machines at work ( SMT LED component placement on circuit boards ). I noticed one in the solder printer that was the same size and shape as a PGR Flea. I wondered whether they were ever used for astrophotography, especially solar. You have answered my question.

Hi James

Yes Basler camera can be used but not all software support them in the best way. I use Genika and I found that it works very well. I can get the complete control on all the camera parameters we need and I can achieve the max framerate of the camera (but you need a fast disk). Telescope mount is made by the Avalon Instruments here near Rome. It's made expecially for the astrophotograpy with compact OTA like SC/RC but still usable with refractors. And it's red, in Italy we love red machine ;)
