January 21 2023. WLC Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Today's session was from 16:00 to 17:00 UTC. It was very intermittent with varying thicknesses of clouds blocking the way. From nearly opaque to lightly frosted glass to nearly absent. I initially started out with the SUNoculars and could see only two spots through those and a little later I noticed the clouds thinning a bit and brought the Orion70 out. The temperature is 40F ( 4.4C ) The seeing was fair/average to maybe a bit below.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x, 41.5x, 50x and 62.5x ( WLC )
Through the clouds I can see seven active regions on the white light photosphere. Five numbered on the KSO image in the north and two numbered on the KSO image in the south.

AR13199 in the NE quad is seen as a grouping of eight spots/pores with a ninth one due south. A spot marking a new system is seen on the SDO HMIc and GONG WL image to the ENE of AR13199 very near the limb. I never saw it in the scope. NW of AR13199 lies the single structured spot of AR13198. SW of it I can see three small spots that are associated with AR13197. SDO HMIc and KSO WL shows a pore associated with AR13196 to the SW of AR13197. I failed to see it. The NW quadrant shows AR13192 as three easy spots showing some structure. I can see some smaller pores east to south of these three spots. AR13191 is a two spot group SW of AR13192. The eastern one can be seen as a group of tiny pores at 50x and 62.5x. SDO, KSO and GONG WL images all show AR13186 almost at the NW limb as a single spot and NE trailing faculae. I failed to spot these through the clouds.

AR13194 in the SW quadrant shows itself as a crescent shaped asterism of about a dozen small spots and pores. A faint facula lies just SW of this group. NE of the group lies the magnificent AR13190. It's large leading spot still shows decent detail despite the seeing not quite being as good as it was yesterday. I can see the umbra as having an embryonic " critter " shape with a fat body and neckless blunt head and an eastward facing tail. A light bridge forms the critter's mouth on the SW side and I can see another light bridge near the end of the critter's tail. It's surrounded by it's " amnion " penumbra. I cannot see the detail in the penumbra that I could see yesterday but the large penumbra itself is easy to see as a grey envelope around the umbra. Did anyone here ever see the science/horror move Splice? When the embryonic Dren emerged from her embryonic sac she tore her way out with a spiked tail and somewhat resembled the shape of the umbra of this spot. I really liked " Splice " overall but disliked the ending. Dren could have been so much more. Ok, back to topic. An easy dark pore lies on the northern edge of the penumbra and another pore lies just to the WNW of the spot. South is a more diffuse spot. Smaller pores to the east follow the bigger spot westward. I see no regions in the SE quadrant.

The fine solar granulation can be seen today, more easily in clearer breaks between the clouds.

Carpe Diem!

James

Thanks for the report James! My saturday session never materialised, while at wrok was lovely blue skies and sunny, then about 10 minutes before we left thick freezing fog appeared, and the sun disappeared. I did get a view of the naked spot though with just naked eye through the fog before it got so thick that the sun completely disappeared, so better than completly nothing

Thanks for the report James.
PS
James I have ordered a pair of Baader AstroSolar sunfilters for ASBF 50mm binoculairs, because the long waiting time for the Lunt Sunocular.

Thank you, James. Sorry I could image AR 3190 only on the 15th: this weekend no imaging due to cloudy weather. These opportunities dot not come very often.

Maurits,
Those should work as well. Are they 10x50s?

Franco,
I am under cloudy rainy skies today too. I seem to have more of those in the winter months.

Sorry you got clouded out. A naked eye fog filtered sun is better than no sun at all. Was the spot easy to see?

Yes James 10x50 Baader WL filters for my 8x 42 binocular.
10x50 WL filters are the smallest.

That's a nice looking filter. 8x42 is a good size for a solar binocular. Small enough and low enough in magnification for a steady image because they are light and easy to hold.
