Lunt 40

Post by ffellah »

Hello all: I am looking for a small Ha scope for mainly FD imaging but that could be used for observing also. The Lunt 40 came to mind: I would appreciate any opinion and comments and any images you can share taken with this scope. Looking for something small, easy to operate and that gives decent results.

Thank you,

Franco

Franco, I have the older little Lunt LS35 Ha scope and the images and views are very very nice, sometimes I couldn't believe what sush little scope can.
I'm sure the Lunt 40 mm Ha scope is probably even better.

I had a quick visual session with my little 35 mm Lunt.

I had a very small recording, only 100 frames (10%stacked) with the DMK41 camera on my small grab and go mini camera tripod (so no guiding).
Only AutoStakkert 3, no processing none.
I couldn't believe that FD result ... Of course not perfect but good for a quick peek ...

PS
I know the orientation is wrong.

I shoot that trough my not so clear (rather dirty) kitchen window glass, from the kitchen table and between the clouds.

Thank you, Maurits ! A pretty good result for the conditions… this is very encouraging.

I like what I see.

40mm works well for me. I added the feather touch focuser, and B1200. I'm using an ASI174 mini for imaging. With a 2x Barlow, I need 2 frames to get the entire solar disk.

18-20mm eyepiece is good, maybe push it to 12-13mm. At 9mm the image is getting dim.

I use it on an old Vixen GP mount, or in the dome, strapped to an SCT. Very portable.

Eric.

hello!

I received last week two lunt40. after one afternoon in the shop with my small leathe, first tests this morning with DS...

This instrument is one of the best I have own: very light, quickly "thrown" into the street for a quick solar viewing session.

Next step, I will integrate this DS in a collimated beam inside a bigger refractor focuser....
Actually, the set up is quite tiny:

Images in DS are very bright, like eric's pictures above. But the filaments are darker and prom on the limb are brighter, and bright areas too.

Where did you get the focuser upgrade? My Lunt 40 helical focuser stinks.

The Feathertouch focuser is one of the options you can get from Lunt. It's a $223 USD upgrade from the helical focuser ($320 vs $97 USD when initially ordered).

"Stinks" = a wobbly focuser or just not a fan of helicals? Wobbly = if you turn the focuser ring clockwise to focus it is ok unless it shifts counter-clockwise and vice-versa. There is a few degrees of rotational play in focuser. The Lunt Helical I had was fine new, then developed the "wobble" after a few hours of use. Replaced it with the Coma Helical. So far, no issues. But... don't think the Coma can handle the load of a binoviewer and couple EPs. Normally silky smooth. With the heavy load there is tightness in the focusing ring when turning it. Placed an order with Lunt for the FeatherTouch. 1.5kg lifting load. Wait time is now 5-6 months.
