Hbeta & Halpha spectroheliograms 2023-02-22

Post by Alun_H »

Only had a small window of opportunity to get a scan or two earlier this afternoon before the Sun disappeared behind the neighboring houses but I managed to record a scan in the Hydrogen beta and the Hydrogen alpha wavelengths with the 72ED/Herschel wedge and Sol'Ex+ QHY5III 178M.
16x slew speed used on the CEM60 to force the scan, again these are single scans and the only processing after having reconstructed in Ver 3.7 is a resize of the images for posting and rotation/flip to correct orientation.

Was the gain a little on the high side?

Hi Douglas,I was rushing to capture the data so yes the gain might have been pushed a bit higher.

Ha & Hb look similar yet different.

What is a scan? I know nothing about one of these except it can image in any spectral line. Because of this they have great potential.

A scan is where the slit of the spectroheliograph is placed to one side of the solar disk then using a 16x (or less) sidereal speed on the mount and a fast frame planetary camera a recording is made whilst forcing the slit across the disk.

For a more detailed explanation there are a few videos on Christian Buil's Sol'Ex web site http://www.astrosurf.com/solex/sol-ex-o ... on-en.html

Thanks for the explanation. The SolEx obviously won’t work with an altazimuth mount?

Douglas answered this very question over on the french Solex-project group and following his advice I 'd say there is nothing to stop the use of an
alt-azimuth mount. :)

That is surprising. I use three manual mounts and one tracking mount, a Sky-Watcher AZGTI. All alt-az. I’ll read up. Thanks for the links.
