New Baader Calcium GEN-II 1.25" Filter

Post by marktownley »

Spotted this today

https://www.firstlightoptics.com/solar- ... -lpfc.html

Interestingly it comes with ND3.8 film... That might have more interest than the filter itself ;)

Funny, you should mention it. I just received mine from TS today.
I hadn’t noticed that included the Baader 3.8. It is 150 mm I believe. Wish it were larger.

Sounds just like a Baader K-line filter, mine came with ND3.8 film too. It doesn't say what nm bandwidth it is.

Its 5nm. So a bit tighter compared to the old versions 8nm, supposed to have a bit better contrast.

Hello,
This is a 5 nm filter with a peak transmission > about 90% :

I would be incredibly surprised if there is much difference in contrast between old and new, it's a bit like their old and new continuum in that respect.

The transmission is higher than the original which makes it more appealing as a blocker in a homebrew CaK setup.

Yes, contrast wise i guess not much reason to get it if you have the old one.. its just a new revision.
Would be interesting to see cheaper narrowband filters with <1nm on the market.. should be just a matter of some years : )

In fact, there is a small gain on contrast when going to narrower band pass. I have :
- an Edmund Optics, FWHM = 10 nm
- the "single stack" Baader K-line (one stack was broken ...), FWHM = 9 nm
- the original Baader K-line (double stack) FWHM = 7 nm,
- an Andover, FWHM 5 nm,
- an Antlia 3 nm (not mine), FWHM 3 nm.
There is for sure an increase of contrast when going from 10 nm to 3 nm. Big or small is a matter of appreciation ;-)

On the opposite there is no difference between the double-stack and single-stack continuum filters, since there is no line in the continuum (by definition ...).

A very good addition to the large list of near-UV filters currrently available would be a 430 nm FWHM 2 nm (G-band filter). Let's hope some manufacturer takes the challenge soon.

Another good addition would be a 1.5 A Ca II filter -hardcoated, 2-cavity) at reasonnable price. Which means having a large batch done.

Here is a comparison between the antlia 393-3 nm and the Edmund Optics :

The difference between the Antlia (FWHM = 3 nm) and a 5 nm filter (Baader or other) would be smaller. I'll show a picture of it when I'll get back some clear sky ;-)

Hi -
For those who are state-side, would you mind sharing where you purchased this new Baader filter ?
I see it available from several EU vendors but none in the USA.

Thank,
Philippe F.

Oleg, i can recommend you the Antlia. Its quality is good enough for most of our purposes and its a bit narrower then the baader.
