Lichtenknecker Ha 150/3600 (F24) is completed
The week of work finally paid off. Tyrannosaurus Rex is done.
It will require minor adjustments to increase stiffness, but otherwise it seems to work. The sun is not in sight, so there will be plenty of time to finish.

I tested in the open doors of the workshop. Rain and wind outside. My test Chinese box survived everything unscathed.

WoW. Amazing work Petr!! This long focal ratio should work wonderfully with a Quark or any rear mounted etalon. T-Rex is a piece of art as well.

It wouldn't surprise me if some TV producers want to use that scope in a science fiction series (like some Moonraker scopes) - a slightly steampunk feel to it? Looks great!

Re: Lichtenknecker Ha 150/3600 (F24) is completed
Your skills in design and fabrication are incredible.
I see you have some large optical flats now. They really help in reducing the physical length of the folded assembly.
The combination of D-ERF and objective are a really heavy unit out there on the end of the OTA.
This increases the moment quite dramatically. As does the focuser and H-alpha filter assembly.
It will be interesting to see how you can stiffen the existing structure. The parallel bars are inherently flexible.
They offer little geometric moment. Each acting only in isolation rather than as a combination of them all.
If it were me, I would add a rectangular, box section, aluminium, mounting rail the entire length of the OTA.
Assuming you can source such tubing locally. It would provide stiffness out of all proportion to its added weight.
It would also look like a natural part of the design. I found such material is readily available in builder's merchants.
It is sold in lengths up to 3m, or more, as a straight edge for leveling concrete and wall plaster.
Sometimes they add bubble levels but at considerably increased prices. The tubing has a central rib for greater stiffness.
Plastic end caps provide attractive closure. They are plastic foil wrapped to maintain their high cosmetic appearance.

Re: Lichtenknecker Ha 150/3600 (F24) is completed
Since I have been working in mechanical engineering for almost 30 years, I already have some experience and, in addition, high-quality software for simulating the static and dynamic properties of structures. The rigidity of this system is very good, I just entered the focal length incorrectly and I need to add one more partition for the focus holder. Pipe extension is not good.Rusted wrote: ↑Sat Mar 25, 2023 6:27 am Your skills in design and fabrication are incredible.

The lens and mirrors are from Mr. Lichtenkrecker's workshop. It is a set from an older refractor. The mirrors are planar.

So the editing is done. The top picture shows how the sharpener extension stresses the bend. The bottom picture shows the modified state, where the stiffness is significantly higher. The laser stiffness test of the structure showed a shift of the point by about 0.2 mm with a load of 8 kg at the end, which is 150% of the weight of the lens and DERF. At a focal length of 3.6m it is completely negligible.

Re: Lichtenknecker Ha 150/3600 (F24) is completed
I am currently dealing with collimation issues. Each focuser has its optical axis somewhere else and most importantly never in the center of the tube. I will have to set up a single focuser and use that. Otherwise, the T-Rex works well. Mr. Lichtenknecker was a very good optician. I'm just trying not to spoil his perfect work too much with my own.
