AR3256 & Friends | Cont, CaK, Ha | March 24th 2023

Post by MalVeauX »

Hi all,

Clear skies this morning with a deep blue, wonderful transparency and some sub-arc-second seeing to go with it (around 0.8~1 arc-second peaks this morning). Visual was wonderful, the complex active region group of AR3256, 3257 & 3259 make a lovely area rich in faculae, filaments, fibrils, and fantastic penumbra around their larger spots and it's all facing right at us near the center of the disc. Great mottling in Halpha near most of the areas. I did a quick imaging session to capture the multi-group region in high resolution with the sub-arc seeing.

I think you did an outstanding effort with amazing results!

What equipment did you use?
I am interested in particular for hydrogen alpha images: you got a flat in band field with also prominence included.
No double rim in the border of the Sun and great uniformity.
My sincere compliments.

White light: Skywatcher 120 ED and Borg 76 ED with Baader Herschel Wedge and filters
H-alpha: Lunt LS50T Ha BF600, 120 ED modified by Lunt etalon. Thousand Oaks 0.9 Å Prominance filter
Calcium II K: Lunt B1200

WoW, Marty. Very nice. I had really good seeing today too. I find it amazing that you saw the faculae involved with the big active region complex in the south central part of the sun. What scope and filters were you using to view the sun visually? I have also occasionally got faculae well inside the disc. I usually see it as more of a disturbance in the granulation field when doing so and it's usually with the C102 and the wedge and 540nm filter.

Excellent on all but it's the photosphere ones that grab me.

As you have said, seeing is everything!!!
Lovely images - any chance of sending some of that sub arc second seeing our way? Thanks :)

Hi,

I use the following:

Celestron 150mm F8 achromatic doublet
Aries tri-band D-ERF (214mm diameter with masks)

Photosphere: No D-ERF, just used a Baader Ceramic-Cool 2" Wedge with a 540nm Continuum filter and ND3 filter with IMX290 sensor and 1.6x barlow

CaK: Tri-band D-ERF masked to 120mm (F10), Lunt B1200 (12mm) calcium module, IMX290 sensor and 1.6x barlow

H-alpha: Tri-band D-ERF masked to 150mm (F8), Lunt 60 mod (air etalon 1), 10mm blocking filter + ITF, Baader TZ4 4x telecentric, PST etalon (air etalon 2), 0.6x reducer, IMX174 sensor

As above for equipment but with an eyepiece; in the photosphere its hard to see faculae directly facing us, but they leap out in calcium, one of my favorite parts of calcium is just that. And the mottling of the h-alpha chromosphere network over those faculae match up.

Very best,

Marty,
Yes, in calcium it would be better. That's why I want one of those Antlia 3nm K-line wedges. While not narrow band enough to see most CaK features in the lower chromosphere, they do better than many other " continuum " filters at seeing faculae on the photosphere well inside the limb. In ultra-narrowband CaK they are called " plages " just like in Ha because one is then seeing more chromosphere than photosphere.

All these pictures are incredibly sharp and detailed. I'm impressed by the great contrast reached in H alpha, uncountable tiny details
