Lichtenknecker Ha 150/3600 (F24) first light 27.03.

Post by pupak »

Today's first light was a tough fight. Gusty wind, haze, fast clouds, snow. Only the grasshoppers were missing.
I really wanted to test the telescope and finally took a few pictures. There was no chance to set anything at all, everything has to wait for better weather. Focus length 7.2m (F48).

The telescope itself weighs 14.2 kg with accessories (Barlow, etalons, camera) 16.3 kg. The small EQ-HD mount still manages it without the slightest problem and that was a really strong wind today.

Thank you all for the positive feedback.
It was the first test on the Sun and I think there is still room for improvement. I have to make covers and screens for the mirrors, blacken the reflective surfaces and then hopefully it will be finally done. The long focal length provides a calm image even in worse conditions, which was my main motivation for building this telescope. The length of 125 cm and the weight of about 16 kg make it usable even on smaller assemblies such as EQ6.
I'm looking forward to another sunny day.

That looks like an incredibly challenging sky.
The images are amazing Petr.
The scope looks to be well worth the effort.
We agree with Franco, looking forward to future results.

Pupak,
Coming back for another look I find these images even more impressive. The detail is astounding. Indescribable. Your scope is a magnificent display of your engineering skills!

What surprises me is that you are not using a high-end camera and etalon, like a Solar Spectrum on your scope. Your scope just screams " high end ". And your drive and mount are awesome too!

How good this objective works on bright planets and the moon? How good is it's color correction?

The lens was offered as semi-apo, so the color flaw should not be noticeable. In addition, F24 will probably also have a positive effect. I haven't tested it yet, but I tested the previous Chinese AR150/F15 and was very pleasantly surprised that even at 2D magnification, the color flaw was only slightly visible at the light/dark interface. I practically did not observe her on the surface of the moon. I wanted to try the collimation test on a star.

Thank you very much James for your words of praise, but I don't think my telescope is anything special. There aren't many options to make it light, stiff and work.
I've built custom CNC machines for 20 years, so I've got decent machinery and some experience. I am already retired, so I enjoy making light mounts with harmonic gearboxes and various astro equipment. In this way, I obtain funds for the purchase of etalons, cameras and optics. I abandoned night astronomy because after 9pm my body refuses to function and requires bed.
The sun wears me out completely though. Every day is different and full of surprises.
I don't think there is that much of a difference between the USD10000 etalon and the Quark combo. The professional one has a larger diameter, better bandwidth, better homogeneity. It's fine for measuring purposes, but I don't need it. On the one hand, I don't have the money for it, and on the other hand, I'm a person of the road. Give me the best gear in the world and I won't even take it out in two months.
During my life, I changed perhaps a dozen fields, because I desire to create and learn new things. I'm not an astronomer.
I am an eternal pilgrim on a path that has only one end.
Petr

Petr,
You certainly have skills. When you don’t have the money to buy it you make it! You are like me. Money is limited and I buy what suits my need. I still find it amazing that I own two Ha solar telescopes. I caught them both on sale at the time and now they are nearly double the price I paid for them and that was 3 and 4 years ago. I am new to Ha solar but have been doing WL off and on for decades.

I await retirement. It’ll give me more time. I am 58 years old so I still have a few years.

Where are you located? Czechia if I remember right?

Yes, I live in the northwest of Bohemia.
As far as equipment goes, I'm not willing to pay large sums for components I don't necessarily need, since I'm not a professional astronomer. I prefer to make everything I can because that's what I enjoy the most. I'm constantly discovering what I don't know, so there's still a lot to learn before my journey ends at a crossroads.

I understand you, Petr. I am not a professional either but enjoy this for the sheer fun and fascination of it. Amateur Astronomy is a road I have followed since 1978 when I got my first telescope as a Christmas gift, a cheap department store 50mm refractor. I have been interested in nature, in science about as long as I can remember.

Solar Astronomy is awesome. It avoids light pollution and inconvenient and often uncomfortable observing times. And there is so much available online to support one's work. So many ways to learn and observe. It's something I would have dreamed of when I was young. Observing on a computer, either online or through your own camera! That's damnn cool!!

And then there is SolarChat and meeting people like you. :-)

Have a good night Petr. It's raining and storming here so I likely won't be observing today. And Slooh is down for weather too.
