Late sun images today 28 March 2023
So much for sunny Australia. It is now exactly 2 months since we last had a proper solar session with clear skies and no interruptions. Today didn't disappoint in continuing our run of ordinary solar imaging. It was forecast to rain late this afternoon, instead there was a small break in the clouds. We deliberated whether it would last long enough to grab an image or two but decided to try. It was only just. We grabbed a couple of videos between clouds with seeing averaging no better than 3 arc seconds. To amuse ourselves while waiting for this La Nina weather phenomenon to finally break up and leave our country, we did a time lapse between the last couple of images.
First a two panel mosaic in Ha. We had images from the 22, 25 and today for the time lapse. Then a full disk in 393nm. We only had an image from the 22 and today for the time lapse.

Nice disks. The regions in the north and south are wonderfully depicted. It’s almost like two rivers of activity are like belts on the disk.

Agreed! Very nice discs. The Sun does indeed have belts. It always reminds me of it’s smaller orbital companion. Jupiter.

By the way I also have a Daystar Solar Scout 60mm (version with the "unremovable" quark unit) and I see from old posts that you 3D printed an adapter to put the quark unit in a standard 2" focuser... this is very nice solution, I would also need something like this!

It’s really frustrating when the weather doesn’t cooperate and you have to go fishing in the cloud gaps. Nice results from your perseverance.

Re: Late sun images today 28 March 2023
Our Solar Scout is also the "unremovable" Quark unit so we had to design our own adapter as you noted. It doesn't go directly into a 2" focuser. Our adapter has an M42 thread on it which we screw into a 2" extension tube as per pictures. We are happy to provide the stl file for our adapter if that is of any help to you.daniele_bonfiglio wrote: ↑Thu Mar 30, 2023 8:13 amThank you for the explanation, Claire and Peter. Dear Clare and Peter, sorry for the naive question: why you opted for a M42 thread? Most of the 2" extension tubes have M48 threads of I'm not wrong... Just in case, it would be possible to modify your file putting a M48 thread instead of a M42 one? Thanks a lot and sorry for the trouble!Averton wrote: ↑Fri Mar 31, 2023 10:20 amDaniele, here is the stl file. We use M42 T threads as all of our ZWO cameras have that thread. We do not have a camera or adapter for M48. Unfortunately its not really practical to modify the CAD file without having an adapter to test a print with. This is because, unlike CNC, FDM 3D printing has shrinkage which has to be determined by experiment so without a test piece its not possible to make a model. Sorry about that.

Re: Late sun images today 28 March 2023
Hi Clare and Peter, thank you it's okay anyway, I think I have found on the internet an extension tube that should work well with your 3D printed adapter. It has an M42 thread on the quark side and a 2” nose with a M48 thread on the telescope side for the required IR cut filter. This is the picture... What do you think?Averton wrote: ↑Sun Apr 02, 2023 12:54 pmHi Daniele,daniele_bonfiglio wrote: ↑Sat Apr 01, 2023 4:44 pm Dear Clare and Peter, sorry for the naive question: why you opted for a M42 thread? Hi Daniele,daniele_bonfiglio wrote: ↑Sun Apr 02, 2023 1:50 pmHi Clare and Peter, thank you it's okay anyway, I think I have found on the internet an extension tube that should work well with your 3D printed adapter. Most of the 2" extension tubes have M48 threads of I'm not wrong... Just in case, it would be possible to modify your file putting a M48 thread instead of a M42 one? Thanks a lot and sorry for the trouble!
Best,
Daniele
We use M42 T threads as all of our ZWO cameras have that thread. We do not have a camera or adapter for M48. Unfortunately its not really practical to modify the CAD file without having an adapter to test a print with. This is because, unlike CNC, FDM 3D printing has shrinkage which has to be determined by experiment so without a test piece its not possible to make a model. Sorry about that.
Daniele
That looks like it should do the job.

Re: Late sun images today 28 March 2023
Hi Clare and Peter,
thank you again for sharing the stl file!
I finally managed to get the adapter 3D printed based on it. This is the result, the material is ABS.
May I ask a couple of questions:
1) what is the size of the 3 screws to be used to hold the quark?
2) do you confirm that I also need a 2" IR cut filter for use on a 80 mm refractor? I see you have the ZWO... I have found on Amaz... a similar 2" IR-UV cut filter by Svbony: do you think this will do the job as well?
Best regards,
Daniele

Your printed adapter looks good.
We used M4 nylon screws to retain the Quark.
From the DayStar manual
"To prevent damage, we recommend using an Energy Rejection Filter on telescopes of 80mm aperture or more, or when tracking the Sun for long periods. This can be a UV/IR cut filter mounted before the diagonal, or a full aperture red or yellow glass ERF mounted in front of the telescope."
So we use the 2" IR/UV cut filter even with our 72ED as well as our K102.
SVBony filters seem quite reasonable so we can see no reason why it wouldn't do the job.
Looking forward to seeing your pictures

Thank you very much Clare and Peter! Actually I have to get a telescope before taking any picture! I am thinking of a 80mm f6 achromat.Averton wrote: ↑Sat Jun 10, 2023 11:48 amHi Daniele,daniele_bonfiglio wrote: ↑Fri Jun 09, 2023 2:56 pm Hi Clare and Peter,
