Cardboard PST Full Disk

Post by StarryDave »

Here is a link to my first real go with my modified PST which is described in the mods section. My initial plan was to use a 70mm objective to prove the design and then upgrade to 90-100mm. However, I can see that the 70mm has a lot of potential so I will stick with it for a while. Big thanks again to the forum members who helped me with my mod.

Hello Dave,

Why is the sun so big ?
Can you give me a link to your cardboard PST, I am intrigued, I have never heard or seen cardboard being used.

Many thanks.
Magnus

Nice image!

Sonotube, a thick very strong glue impregnated cardboard tube that is usually used for pouring concrete pilings/piers was used in many of John Dobson's original dobsonian tubes. The first commercial dobsonians made by Coulter Optical Company also employed the sonotube as the tube for the scope with a large wooden box at the back end. I once had some similar but smaller tubes that held rolled plastic that I had saved for the use of building a telescope but never used them.

It doesn't matter whether it is cardboard or not as long as it works and lasts. I still have my sonotube Coulter 10.1" today. 41 years after I bought it. And it still works! I have had the mirrors re-aluminized two or three times since then.

Thanks folks. Here is a link to the forum thread about my mod viewtopic.php?t=40419

I wanted to do a quick test with a 70mm lens so I just wrapped a cardboard tube in duck tape for waterproofing. It wasn't until I finished it that I remembered my first scope as a boy was from Charles Frank in Glasgow. It was a simple refractor and the main tube was cardboard wrapped in black plastic. It was a real cheapie but I have been astronomising ever since so a good investment.

Magnus - the image is a mosaic made from several images taken with a DMK21. I processed them in waveSharp and found that I could resize by 150% without losing detail (just experimenting).

Here is my cardboard scope - the mod only cost me ~£230 :P

It looks good! 👍🏻. I don’t see many people using DMK cameras anymore.

Finally got some 'clear' sky to try out the cardboard PST with a 2.5x Powermate and the results look pretty good. Animation is below

Thanks Mark - I am still looking for the "Thanks" button so this is my thanks.

Great to see someone else is going to try out our design. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
