Session time was from 15:15 until 16:20 UTC. The skies are partly to mostly cloudy. The seeing is poor. The temperature mid-session is 70F ( 21.1C )
Lunt 8x32 SUNoculars. ( WLC )
The AR13301-02-05 complex in the NW quadrant is visible as three spots. I can also see a new spot very close to the SE limb. It must be sizeable!
Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 31x. ( WLC )
I can see eight active regions on the photosphere today. Five are in the northern hemisphere . All five of these are labeled on the SolarMonitor images. Three are seen in the southern hemisphere. Two of these are number labeled on the SM images.
I can see AR13308 which is just west of the CLM in the NW quadrant as two close together tiny pores. SDO HMIc 2K images show some pores just to their west but I cannot see them. Probably obliterated by high clouds and poor seeing. The AR13301-02-05 complex in the NW quad is seen as five distinct parts with a structured spot in the middle. All in all, 8, maybe 9 spots/pores are visible in this AR conglomerate. The northernmost spot of the group, AR13302 also shows umbra-penumbra structure. NW of this AR complex I can see the faculae marking the location of AR13304.
AR13306 is visible as a patch of faculae near the SW limb. WNW of it lies a small spot which marks the location of AR13303. Though the SDO HMI continuum 2K image shows a pore at the location of AR13307 in the SE quadrant, I cannot see it. It's probably a victim of poor seeing. I can see a new active region that is just inside the SE limb! I see a large structured spot with a smaller spot just NE of it. It's unnumbered as of yet.
The granulation is not noticed at all. Probably because of the poor seeing.
Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x. ( 656.28nm )
I can see nine active regions in the chromosphere today. Five in the northern hemisphere with all having NOAA labeling on the SM images. Four are seen in the southern hemisphere. All are labeled except one. My visual view is quite similar to that of the GONG BBSO Ha image, except the visual view is in vivid Ha red!
Three nice filaments are seen near the NE limb. The middle one of these is especially prominent. A large " blotch " filament is seen in the far NE quadrant. AR13308, just across the CLM in the NW quad shows itself as plage. Just E-NE of this plage lies two easy filaments. West of AR13308 lies the AR13301-02-05 complex. I see three spots here among easy scattered plage. A fainter filament is seen NW of this complex. GONG shows a fine filament between the spots of AR13301 and AR13302. I cannot see it with certainty. Probably because of poor seeing. An area of low contrast plage is seen WNW of the AR13301-02-05 complex. It's all that I can see of AR13304.
AR13306 in the SW Quad is seen also as a faint low contrast patch of plage. It's quite small. WNW of it lies a fairly bright patch of plage that is labeled as AR13303. Throughout the session I can see it vary in brightness. There is C class flaring going on here! SW of AR13303 I can see with difficulty a plagey belt of disturbance. NW of this belt of disturbance in the SE quad I can see a small but not overly difficult plage. It's labeled as AR13307. SE of AR13304 lies a very easy C shaped filament that lies in the belt of disturbance. Well east of the " Big C " lies an easy spot very near the SE limb that is a new emerging active region.
I can also faintly make out polar crown filaments near both poles though the one above the south pole is a bit easier. Plus an easy one in the SW quadrant below the two aforementioned active regions.
I'll let GONG speak for the small prominences visible.
The mottles are visible but soft.
Carpe Lumen!
James

Thanks for the report James, i'm determined to get home as early as I can this evening to try and capitalise on the good weather we are currently having.

Re: May 17 2023 Observations
Thanks, Mark. Take advantage of it. Lately as you can tell I have been fighting clouds and poor seeing.

Re: May 17 2023 Observations
Excellent to hear of a new AR in the SE James and what an amazing C shaped filament!
Hopefully my G band filter arrives today, I am itching to use it but even if it is sunny these next two weekends we are busy so I won't be able to solar view, what luck

Re: May 17 2023 Observations
Thanks and welcomes, everyone. So far I am completely overcast and Slooh Teide is still down for technical issues and the KSO is down because of the weather. Thankfully the GONG network and the SDO will pull through.
I still have the little Lunt 8x32s at the ready. Just in case.
Alexandra,
Usually when one gets a new piece of hardware there are clouds. Or too much of something else to do. :-(
