ED Triplet 90/F7 and AR150/F15 test H-alpha 22.05.

Post by pupak »

Today the sun was hazy, so at least I tested. I tried the new ED triplet 90/F7 with Strehl 0.985 at F28 and refracted AR150/F15 at F45.
Interestingly, a quality ED tripler is also quite usable for detail. I'm curious to see how it performs when the weather is really good.

The lens is from LZOS.

I read that those are quite good.

It is an older fluorite triplet used by Stellarvue and TS. The prices of these telescopes were quite high. Mine with the FTT sharpener cost €3,200 12 years ago. There is also a measurement protocol from LZOS for it. The question is how much Strehl has deteriorated over the years. It happens quite often that after revision the results are not as good as with a new telescope. I want to try to convert it into a FD solar telescope with a collimated LS80+Quark. He still doesn't have a telescope for FD and that bothers me quite a bit.

Petr, as always, is beyond praise! It seems to me that for shooting the sun in the hydrogen line, the characteristics of the lens in the red channel are more important than the Strehl number. However, for LZOS, they are most likely close to ideal. With the f7 triplet, Lunt will also work fine.

Pupak,
I always wondered who’s glass StellarVue used. I had read some time back that they bought their lenses from someone else and did not grind their own. I read that they did do the final figuring of the lens on their own. This has been some time back.

It is possible that at different times they solved this by buying from other manufacturers. I'm not an expert on this brand. My piece has a lens from LZOS and I believe they went with a cheaper glass manufacturer a few years later. If it weren't for the protocol from LZOS, I wouldn't even know what kind of lens is there.
