huge flare today with spectro coro 27th may 2023

Post by ChrisHalpha2017 »

Hello...
I was about to take an afternoon nap (1st day of summer hollydays for me) and i decided to check on GONG....

There seem to be a flare ; so I checked with my spectro coronagraph. The sky was becoming hazy so I had to use the 2400 lines...

and here is what I got !!
eruption 2 2400 tmm 2_20230527_121925.950_UT.jpg

I didnt get it from the beginning... but still I think its the biggest I could catch since i started in 1998 with the spectro wide slit !

At the end , the sky became so white that now I cant see anything...(thats why the last photo is bad )

Chris

thanks a lot :)

usually I try to image with a 600 or 1200 lines/mm to get very fine details but the sky was so bright and milky that i couldnt see anything with them. The 2400 gave great contrast but the images are much prone to deformation due to Doppler effect :)

thank youuuuuu ^^

but guess what ?.. Not only i've just found out that The loss of quality in my photos compared to what I actually see came from the fact that i didnt know that it was best to extract the images from the SER files into TIFF or BMP format instead of JPEG!!! And also I discovered yesterday that Autostackaert allows to save the stacked photo in TIFF!!!
So now i'll be able to take better photos :)

...ANd the worst stupid mistake : For this big flare I oriented the 2400 lines grating the wrong way so the image is distorted!!! arrrgllll...
Never mind ; I learned 2 new things that's going to help me getting better results...

To give an idea of the true quality here are 2 photos taken the May 26th...

@highfnum
hi :)
that makes me think at something : what format are you extracting you images from ? AVI or SER ?( when you are using the wide slit method) Are you treating your images in TIFF or BMP or like I used to do in JPEG ? it seems it can make a huge difference. And I'd say did you check the orientation of your grating ? I noticed that if the blazed surface (for a blazed grating) isnt turned toward the chamber objective lens the image is dimmer and could be distorted. The higher the number the lines/mm the more it'll be deformed.
