Brief solar session. May 29 2023.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Today's session was in two parts. The first was a short session between 14:52 and 15:10 UTC. The second was a brief period just after 16:00 UTC. Clouds was the issue today. Seeing was just below average and worse during the noon session. The temperature was 62F at 15:00 UTC and 65F at 16:05 UTC. I had little time to take notice of fine detail so the descriptions are brief.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x, 50x and 62.5x. ( WLC )
There are fourteen active regions visible on the photosphere today! Nine of these are in the northern hemisphere. Seven regions are labeled between the KSO and SWL SDO images. The southern hemisphere shows five active regions. Four of these are labeled between the KSO and SWL SDO images.

A new spot is seen just above the equator, very close to the limb in the NE quadrant ( AR13320 ). AR13316 is seen as two tiny spots straddling the CLM. SDO HMIc images show a pore just east of these tiny spots but I didn't notice it. I did see a tiny pore well NNE of AR13316 but I was looking for this one. It lacks a number designation. Two small spots lie NW of AR13316 in the NW quadrant. They lack a number designation. I notice five spots NW of the aforementioned two spots. The southernmost pair are designated as AR13318 and the three just NW of them as AR13317. I lacked the time to get a good look at these. The line of spots marking AR13313-11-14 are in the far NW quadrant. The spot of AR13314 is very close to the limb. Faculae can be seen here.

The large spot of AR13310 is seen very near the SW limb. Though at a very inclined angle it's umbra and penumbra can be seen. Faculae are seen stretching eastward from it. Some of this is associated with AR13312 which has no visible spots. AR13315 is the most notable object in the SW quadrant, really on the entire visible side of the Sun. It's westernmost spot is quite large and easily shows it's umbra and penumbra. If I remember right I saw a light bridge within it. The eastern spot is actually even larger but is more tattered in appearance and I can see some mottling and light places within the penumbra. I had not enough time to notice more specifics. The umbra of the spot is irregular in shape. Two spots marking AR13319 is seen just east of the CLM in the SE quadrant. A new spot is seen almost at the limb in the far SE. I found this one during the short cloud-gap second session.

I did not notice the granulation at all.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 SS. 16x and 25x. ( 656.28nm )
At a glance I could see the Ha Sun quite close to its appearance as seen in the GONG BBSO image. Eight areas are seen in the northern hemisphere. Seven of these are labeled. I see four in the southern hemisphere. Three are labeled. 12 visible in all.

AR13320 is visible only as inconspicuous plage near the NE limb. AR13316 is seen as plage on the CLM. Just WNW of it lies more minor plage. AR13318 is seen as two spots with plage between them. The plage and spots are quickly noticed just NW of AR13318. These are associated with AR13317. The line of spots and minor plages of AR13313-11-14 are seen in the far NW. I did notice a couple of filaments in the northern hemisphere.

The spot of AR13310 is seen near the SE limb. A thin filament is seen NNE of it. Two spots with plage between them ( AR13315 ) are easily seen in the SW quadrant. I did notice two plages in the SE quadrant just east of the CLM. The westernmost one belongs to AR13319. I do not remember seeing the small spots in the scope or the connecting filament as seen in the GONG CTIO image. I just remember noticing it there. I observed way too fleetingly! The two filaments in the SE quad could easily be seen at a glance.

I used single stack today because it allows more light through the scope. That matters when viewing though thin clouds. I didn't even notice the mottling of the chromosphere but they are almost always visible.

Tomorrow has a chance of clouds and storms again. :-(

James

Glad you got a view in JAmes, I had WL and HA views yesterday too, sky was milky but better than cloudy. There's plenty to see at the moment.

Mark,
Thumbs up on you getting white light and Ha views today. I am struggling to get anything. It's mostly cloudy with rain. I have so far managed a very brief white light view through a gap in the clouds. It's about to rain again as I type this.

It's been a weirdly cloudy May.
