Comparison of Newton 180/F11 with Chief 180/F9.

Post by pupak »

Conditions were not good. Azure blue sky without a cloud, but poor seeing and gusty wind. There was also little time (11.20 -12.40). A colleague had to catch the afternoon shift. I will not predict the results. There are two photos attached. Each of only 20 composite and stretched images. Otherwise, no modifications. It's up to you to decide which one is better. The same props and camera were used, but Chief only had 30 minutes to temper. After agreement, we selected the best pictures.

They are very close. I think the second one is slightly better. It's a bit sharper.

You did not really have enough time for a good comparison.

That was basically enough. In the end, we both agreed that if there is any difference in display quality, it is so insignificant that for solar purposes the two designs are comparable.

I'm guessing "Chief" = Schiefspiegler, tilted-component no-obstruction telescope? F/9 probably means an additional lens corrector, is that right?

The Chief is a construction with one 200/F8 parabolic mirror and two correction lenses + - 300mm for aberration compensation. F9 makes it a DERF 180mm shade at the entrance. It's the same with my 200/F10 -> 180/F11.

I prefer the second one as well. But probably essentially equal within the variations of seeing I would guess.

Both are great, but the second one is definitely sharpest / has most contrast.

Giraffe thanks you all for voting for her. The Chief was in a state of temporary construction, which may have affected the image quality, although it was collimated before the test. Maybe someday I'll try to build it, but right now I'm tempted by the H-a on a 250mm non-plated mirror.
The Giraffe is a monster, but it's not heavy and can be handled by a normal EQ6 mount. The image quality is by far the best of all the telescopes I have built. Even in very bad conditions, as they were yesterday at noon, it can provide a decent result on the F33. Today I will try her on the moon.

I wondered which image went to each scope.

#1 - Chief
#2 - Žirafa

Zirafa won. But it was a really close race!
