May 30 2023. Very brief white light sessions.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Today I had two short sessions separated by clouds. The first was a short run between clouds just after 15:05 UTC. Rain preceded it by five minutes!! The second was from 15:50 to 16:00 UTC. Dark clouds with impending rain ended it quickly. The total time of the two combined sessions was roughly 20 minutes. The seeing is a bit above average and the temperature during the second session was 66F ( 18.8C )

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x, 31x, 50x and 62.5x. ( WLC )
Despite the divided session I was able to see and identify all of the present active regions on the disc. There are fourteen of them! Nine of these are located in the northern hemisphere. Five are labeled on the SWL SDO image. The southern hemisphere shows five regions. Four of these are labeled. Yesterday the spot above the equator in the NE quad was labeled AR13320 on the KSO images. Today that number is assigned to a patch of faculae in the SE quadrant. I wish the pros could get it right to begin with!

A now unlabeled spot is seen among faculae in the NE quadrant just above the equator. SDO HMIc shows a pore just east of it that I missed. Two small spots marking an unidentified region NW of the larger unnumbered spot marks another unlabeled area. A patch of faculae is seen NE of this region near the limb. AR13316 is seen as a single tiny spot in the NW quadrant. WNW of it lies a small scattering of small spots and pores. This one is unlabeled too. AR13318 is seen NNW of this small scattered spot grouping. I see it as two structured spots and a couple of pores. AR13317 is another two spot dipole located just NW of AR13318. AR13313 and AR13311 are seen as having a spot apiece. AR13314 is on the limb and cannot be seen.

A patch of faculae is seen near the SW limb. Yesterday, KSO had it labeled as AR13312. Today it is unlabeled on both the KSO and SWL SDO HMIc images. AR13310 has passed the limb and cannot be seen. AR13315 is still a magnificent sight to behold. It has two large spots. The westernmost spot is oval and easily shows it's umbra and penumbra. I can see a thin light bridge within the umbra, difficult at 50x and a bit easier at 62.5x. The eastern spot is very tattered with an umbra fragmented by several large light bridges. The penumbra of this spot is very irregular and tattered. I wish I could have studied this group more during its pass across the disc, both visually and in imaging. In both continuum and Ha. Clouds have really hampered me. But many here have uploaded some really nice images and animations of this region this last week. Cudos to them! Today I have attached a high rez crop of AR13315 from the SDOHMI continuum instrument. AR13319 is a three spot group with pores strung between them. The SE quadrant shows a structured spot near the SE limb a few degrees below the equator. It's now marked as AR13321. AR13320 now marks a patch of faculae just NW of AR13321.

Though visible I hardly paid attention to the granulation to get detail as thoroughly and quickly as possible.

James

Thanks James and glad you got a view in. We had cloud yesterday but I got a few quick views in with the SV50 and saw the spots. Drizzling here this morning so far, then I have a couple of hours at work then we head off to the boat this afternoon for a couple of days. There will be some travelling kit coming with me depending on how much space is left in the car

Great report James, you seem to be having a bad spring this year :(
I'm having a great sunny spring and no time at home ;)

Yes. It’s been one of the cloudiest we’ve had in years. Carry your SUNoculars with you. They won’t replace your scopes but at least you can see the spots.

James.
