Nice ISS transit, May 31

Post by Hankk »

I caught a nice ISS transit this morning! This was my first successful one, and I'm super happy with the detail visible on the space station -- helped by fast exposure and zenith pointing. I like how it looks next to the ARs (3317 + 3318), with the prom's above.

The proper exposure time for the Sun would have been ~5 msec in my Lunt 80 + ASI1600MM, but that would have ended up with a lot of motion blur from the ISS, which crosses the solar disk in < 0.5 sec. Doing some quick calculations I ended up at 0.5 msec. To get good images at a short exposure I removed the DS module (which not only makes things darker, but also occults because it's a 60mm DS on an 80 mm scope -- plus it reduces the resolution). I then took full-disk images of the transit at 50 fps, which was apparently too fast, since I dropped a couple of frames along the way. Right after the transit I put the DS module back on and took some 5 msec DS images to stack for the background. I merged them all in PS.

One of the best we've seen for details of the ISS!
