Ideas to cool the ASI174MM

Post by Ross »

I saw amateur astronomers who tried to cool planetary cameras, I found on the net a "Mobile Phone Cooler, Convex Magnetic Heat Sink, Semiconductor Cooler, Noise Value Below 22 DB" seeing the attractive price I decided to take it and experimenting on my ASI174MM, I use the camera almost exclusively on solar photography and the cooling would have the purpose of keeping the temperature around 20° and perhaps reducing the noise a bit.
The first problem was how to fix the camera, I thought of a sort of light and easily removable cage, to help her husband and the 3D printer ;) we easily made two rings with four holes, then using spacers with which we fixed the whole.

Turned on and connected, the system in about twenty minutes the temperature dropped by almost 10 degrees I would say acceptable, I also took two pictures and the noise is reduced. If you have any suggestions they are always welcome, I will try later to better test the system.

Thanks for your patience and sorry for my english

That's a great test, I've never thought about cooling the camera :hamster:

Very nice Ross.

I've been using this product to cool my ASI 174mm camera for a while now:
https://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Black-Sha ... TLDB7?th=1

I haven't done any testing of darkframes like you have, but I get similar drop in temperature (reported by FireCapture) when using the cooler. Not sure if it makes any significant noise reduction, but at least it keeps the camera in a better operating temperature (not overheating).
