First try with DS - I guess there is some off-banding?

Post by BGazing »

I have finally got to use my DS add-on for Lunt 80, this is the first sort-of sunny day here after several weeks of rain and it is very windy. Seeing was poor, but I just could not wait, as the bad weather is supposed to continue from tomorrow again.
Attached are three images I made two hours apart each approx- Seeing was really really bad and I shot at approx f/9. DS makes details pop, but there's some red glow around (HRG will arrive in three weeks approx). I tuned them differently each time and it seems that the glow in processing is moving around. But - also - I'd say that the sweet spot shrank a bit and that I am seeing part of the disk off band in each of the images. Could the experienced eyes confirm and - if yes - how to tune spot on? I read Bob's Mk1 eyeball advice on brightness sans eyepiece, but found it somehow hard to implement...

Hey, that's good for a first try. Your disks are nice and even. That's a winner for me!

Thank you, you are too kind. Let me explain what I mean - attached are two images in mono, just a bit touched up in IMPPG for a bit of sharpness. On both I'd say that a portion of the disc is either not tuned properly or the camera sensor was not flat - could anyone tell me which of the two? I cannot see the spicules on the blurry part of the disc, which is a normal giveaway of the off-band part of the image. But, then again, it looks as if almost out of focus and not merely not tuned properly.

Not bad for first try! The left of the disk is off band compared to the right. Just keep trying with the tuning, be methodical and systematic and you will get there with it.

Thanks, it's a bit tough...Mk1 eyeball says it's OK and on the screen you see mucho difference...
Does sweet spot shape and size change with DS etalon orientation?

Since this is a very international forum, a lot of users have way slower internet than in the states. If possible, could you upload in jpg format instead of png?
These images are 25MB each…:)
We don’t really restrict anything here on solarchat so we rely on the users to keep it all running smooth.

Thanks,
Stephen

Will do, apologies. I uploaded PNGs before seldom, these are the files I did not upload to flicker.
