Full disk H-alpha, H-beta, Ca-H SHG images -- 4 June

Post by thesmiths »

Conditions were, at the start, very good this morning. I began with H-alpha, which turned out very well. It became slightly more difficult when I moved on to H-beta, and conditions deteriorated a little more when I then turned to Ca-H. The mosaic below is at 50% of the original resolution. Click on the image to see at full screen width (or open in a new tab to see at high resolution, worth it for the H-alpha).

H-alpha SHG, 106mm aperture, stack of 20 scans.
H-beta SHG, 90mm aperture, stack of 12 scans.
Ca-H SHG, 72mm aperture, stack of 15 scans.
H-alpha SHG, 106mm aperture, stack of 20 scans.
H-beta SHG, 90mm aperture, stack of 12 scans.
Ca-H SHG, 72mm aperture, stack of 15 scans.

Superb technology and photos.

I really enjoyed these. The Ha is excellent, I agree. Very nice resolution and contrast. I really like the Hb too. It's something I am not used to seeing. It's similar to Ha but yet different. The visibility of the filaments is stunning in CaH! Most standard filters don't show them at all or show them weakly.

Two thumbs up!!

James

Interestingly, the big feature in the bottom right has disappeared (lifted off?) a day later. See Pedro's H-alpha from the morning of June 5:

Yep. That big filament in the SW quad is obviously gone. I hope someone got a liftoff image. I bet the SDO got it at least.
