Why is it that White Light solar filters should not be cleaned?

My EclipseView has this filter and a small piece of leaf fell on it. I removed it with fingers, then noticed fingerprints so I used a single use lens wipe to clean it. Then I noticed on the back there is a sign saying "Do not attempt to clean or disinfect filter material".

Do you never clean it in the case of dust or footprints? does trying to clean it make the material weaker?

Because you will damage the coatings.

Baader Astrosolar film is coated on both sides making it less susceptable to 'pinhole' problems but the unidentified film in your filter may well be single side coated , as glass filters are , and therefore more likely to be rendered useless , nee dangerous , if the coating is damaged.

P.S. What are you doing to your kit that you need to clean footprints off your solar filter ... ? ...

Just flicking off some organic material from the cover and noticing a finger smudge. At least it's good now
