How do you protect your telescope equipment while travelling?

Post by Solarscout »

On airplanes, do you try to take your telescope equipment as carry on or need to purchase another seat for it? I have not travelled with telescope before and only brought binoculars which fit in my backpack. Smaller cases would be easier as carry on but what if you have a 10' dobsonian?

I don't, but I do store 180 and 140 Maks in a large Max case. Very sturdy and designed for travel. Rather expensive for larger cases ( though less so than a damaged dob!)
I get mine from Amazon, otherwise http://www.max-case.co.uk/

Call me Geoff.

I do what I do because I want to, and because I can....

Doesn't mean I know what I'm doing, though!

When I went to the USA for the eclipse in 2017 I sent the mount in the luggage hold (well padded in my suitcase). The telescope was in my hand baggage and never left my side :)

I wrap mine in my pants and t-shirts and just put it in my case, never had a problem yet!

Except for my Celestron 102, all of my solar telescopes have carrying cases. I have cases for my eyepieces and cameras too. The mounts are simply packed in the car as is. I need to buy a case for the laptop. I wrap it in a pillowcase and a blanket and put it in my suitcase. The Lunt SUNoculars have their own soft nylon carrying case.

I have never taken my 10 and/or 12 inch dobsonians on a long trip but I just break them down and fit them into the car with the optics covered or removed to take them to a local but darker observing site.
