Solar granulation in photosphere near AR13394 and 13395

Post by Sergio Alessandrelli »

Hi to all

I've processed some video I made with my Intes 7" Rumak, one of the first attempt to use it in white light using a Baader astrosolar ND3.8 filter and a 3X Barlow from Celestron.
I used three filters, a Baader Continuum (7.5nm), a Baader CaK (GEN-II, 5nm) and an Altair G-Band (2nm) to compare the results. Camera was a Basler (IMX174) mono. I wasn't able to make good flat, so I used in some case the automatic flat generation in PI but with loss of contrast.
I was not expetting so much resolution from a 7" catadioptric OTA at f/30, granulation are well defined expecially in the G-Band and continuum. For Calcium my OTA seems not so good but I'm very happy of the results I get with it also in H-Alpha. When I bought it second hand I didn't know I could obtain any result on the sun but for me it was not possible to go on a large refractor (>150mm). Seeing was quite good.

Here some pictures, you can find full resolution on my astrobin gallery. Sorry for the long list of picture I've uploaded...

Great shots Sergio, my preference leans toward the shots with the continuum filter.

Thanks. Also for me, the Rumak works better at this wave length.

Excellent! All subtly different, I think my favourite is the G-band.

All are great but in my opinion the Gband images come out on top.

With the other filter I could not make good flat and i think i had reflection produced by the astrosolar filter. I need to mitigate these reflection with the mirrors of the Rumak. Thanks 😉

Hi Sergio,
What is the f-ratio of your Rumak ?
Seeing is much worse in near-UV, so it might be worth trying again in near-UV with better seeing.
