Re: Solar Toolbox for PixInsight

I just posted this in Pedro's post:

Thanks to Ralph Smith for supplying me with some RAW stacked TIF's to play with Solar Toolbox. This is a raw, prom shot only that I just played with and I will say it is fun to use this tool, particularly with the Preview Box so you can see all of the changes before you actually apply the final settings to the image. The great thing is, you can just about do all of your processing in one step after stacking. The only portion I had an issue with was the Prominence Mask not taking the black out disk all the way to the limb. I think this had to do with the existence of a bit of surface detail in the raw image that the software recognized and stopped the black out short of the actual limb. Bill might be able to comment as to how I might have overcome that, maybe with a stretch prior to adding the mask, so I'll have to experiment a bit more. But the sharpening is great as well as the prom boost. Again, the best feature is being able to watch the changes being made to the image live before you even apply them.

This is another of Ralph's raw images that includes the surface with the same prom. I could not quite get the same sharpening on the prom as I could in the prom only shot without making the surface overly sharpened, and again, this may take more practice and Bill might have some suggestions but it seemed as though the sharpening was mostly applied to the surface rather than the proms even though I had selected Surface and Proms for the processing. Also added a colorized as that is a simple step in Solar Toolbox as well, but I'm still a fan of B&W images.
