Can't install Solar tools in Pixinsight

Post by AndreaGirones »

Hello All
I am trying to install the Bill Blanshan's Solar Tools process into Pixinsight. I added it to the repository in the normal way but still cannot find it. I have also tried the supposed fix, "reset updates" twice to no avail.
Any other thoughts?
Andrea

Hi Andrea,

I've just done it now, so I know it works.... :)
I updated PI to the latest version (mine was old!), which may or may not be necessary.

Anyhow, this video is really helpful:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yzfH5x5Smg

I noted the importance of 'Resetting Updates' mentioned at around 8:30 into the video. I had to perform this step in order for the toolbox to show up under the process tab. Not sure why this isn't working in your case.

Good luck.

Stu.

It wasn’t until I updated PI that I was able to load it and I thought I had the most recent update already!

Hello :)
I have the same problem. I added the repo link and nothing happens. Then I reseted the plugins and all my plugins was updated new. But I can not see the solar toolbox. Pixinsight version is 1.8.9-2 build 1598.

Is there an other solution to solve this problem?

Hmm, I currently have 1.8.9-2 1597 and it loaded OK. Have you restarted Pixinsight and in the Process choices it just says Solar.

You can check your Manage Your Repositories and make sure you had the correct address. I messed that up a couple of times.

I have owned pix insight since it first came out and have struggled with it many times usually giving up in the end. I see all of those guys teaching classes at NEAF every year And have developed a strong dislike of having to use the program. lol

Is there a fee for the Solar toolbox and has anyone actually used it? I would hate to think that I will have to get out this program again to work on my solar images.

Yes! I tried the repo link with and without the last / too, tried many different things. I copied the link from youtube. Maybe I will deinstall and install PI new :(
What happens when you copy the link into your browser? I got a 404 error.

It works fairly well and it's free, you just really need to be gentle with the sliders. It works really great to pull proms out without affecting the disk once you have a chance to play with it. I've had a Love/Hate relationship with this program (Pixinsight) since it came out and am always amazed at the results from those that really know how to use it. But not being a formula person, I have struggled just like you. At least now for DSO's they have the Script, Weighted Batch Preprocessing which takes a lot of the work out of what it used to be! Using PixelMath, forgeddaboutit!

I ended up adding it manually by just typing it in

Yes, there is a free program called SolarFinish. It used to be and still can be used with only a command prompt, but has now also more usable window with sliders. Suitable for full disk images only. I liked this one more than Solar Toolbox for PI, which can be used for close up views and full view too.
