Aurora from Lowndesville S.C. at 34 North latitude!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

On Friday night 5-10-24 local time I was totally blown away with my first view of an aurora since 1981. That one was just a dim red thing in the far north. At one point this one covered 90 percent of the sky and had a multitude of colors, pink, green, purple and fuchsia. In dimmer areas I could see the aurora only as a white colorless light due to my eyes not being able to see the color. But my cell phone could pick it up! At one point I could see rays nearly overhead and they would pulse and move! I would certainly put this experience on par with a total solar eclipse. Alexandra, I so much agree with you. I will be looking for Kp8 and Kp9 numbers more often!!

At one point I was speechless!

Here are some of the pictures I took with my iPhone.

I wonder how far south they could be seen. I am thinking Marty, in Florida or Eric and Rainer in Mexico. They were easy here.

Oh Wow!!! James, what a sight and beautiful images. I was literally dancing like a fairy under them on Friday. I will never forget it. We are at 43 degrees N, I am so glad you had such a great show at 34N. I think you guys in America got the better hit. during our night it was only Kp8, during our day (your night) I saw it went up to kp9. But, however, during a kp9 the curtains would be very far south maybe, so perhaps kp8 is our ideal.

It was truly a great night. I wondered for so long whether I ever would see another aurora. This was wonderful!

When I saw it hit Kp9 I thought “ Something has got to happen “. And it did!!

Nic,
It was worth the wait. Maybe if the sun continues to keep this activity up there will be a repeat performance.

James.
