Morning KSO and Evening WL SUNoculars. 5-20-24

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Today was another mostly cloudy day though some sunshine and partly cloudy skies did make an appearance later in the day. This morning I saved a tri-light session from the KSO high cadence feed and later in the day from my Kayak ' the Grey Minnow " on Lake Russell near Lowndesville SC. I observed the Sun using my 8x32 white light Lunt SUNoculars. The session time was around 20:30 UTC under partly cloudy skies. The temperature was 83F ( 28.3C ).

I could see five active regions using the SUNoculars. All in the southern hemisphere. AR13686 shows itself in the SE quadrant as a single spot. Just to the SW of AR13686 and forming a complex with it is AR13685. I can see it as two easy spots with the easternmost spot being the largest. Three close together spots lie between and just north of the main pair of AR13685. Even though the lake was calm the slight movement of the boat made this hard to see. I certainly had to stay still. Fortunately the wind was nearly calm. AR13684 lies on the CLM with an easy lead spot and a couple of more difficult followers. To the west in the SW quadrant I could see the lead spot of AR13679 quite easily. I could difficultly see, really not much more than hint the pore line to the SE of the lead spot. The boat movement made it impossible to see them clearly. To the SW of AR13679 I could see a single spot belonging to AR13674. It was not difficult. I did not see AR13683 near the SW limb. A steadier view might have made it visible. It is what it is.

In a kayak on a lake might not be the best solar observing site but is certainly an unusual one. Later I caught three fish. Two good sized. 🎣

James

The small device next to the SUNoculars is a portable fish finder sonar unit. The transducer is off the right bow of the kayak. And it does work!

Nice report James! Glad you got a view and some fishing in. I'm away on the boat next week.

Thanks James for a lovely report, interesting about the wobble of the boat, maybe not the next Big Bear Solar Observatory then :)

The sonar fish finder, James, that is unfair advantage!!

Alexandra,
Even though the lake was calm, you can tell from the sky reflection on the water in the picture, there was still a slight amount of movement plus nothing to brace the little binos against. It made seeing fine details difficult but I still got a decent view. The fish finder is useful. Remember, they have a big lake to hide in!!

And you are welcome. Hopefully your boat is coming along.

Mark,
Thanks. I caught three fish. A sizable carp, a bass and a bluegill sunfish. Maybe you can take a solar kit on your boat next week. And a fishing kit! 🎣 😁

Franco,
You are welcome.

Warren,
The name fits the tiny boat. And yes it is almost nirvana. It is beautiful and very relaxing on the lake alone.

Thanks!

James
