May 24 2024 White Light Observations.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Today from 18:00 until 18:25 UTC I finally got a decent break through the clouds to get a view of the Sun. I set up yesterday for Ha and never got a clearing through the clouds! Today the seeing was fair/average and the temperature was a rather hot 87F ( 30.5C ).

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x. ( WLC )
Today I could see seven active regions on the photospheric disc. Two in the northern hemisphere and five in the southern hemisphere. All carry NOAA labels on the earlier KSO white light reference image.

AR13690 could be seen as two spots just inward of the NE limb. One very near the limb looks elongated and quite large. On the opposite side of the Sun near the NW limb lies AR13687. It could be seen as a patch of faculae with an embedded pore.

I could see AR13679 very near the SW limb as a single spot. The GONG BBSO WLAI image shows a tiny spot very near the limb SW of it. I did not notice or see that in the scope. Another spot lies just to the NE. This one belongs to AR13684. Two pores lie close by to the spots east. Faculae surround both AR13679 and AR13684. Further eastward lies AR13685 which was seen as two structured spots with a couple of pores north of the lead spot and a small group of pores SSE of the large following spot. The large spot shows it's umbra-penumbra form easily and at 50x I could see some irregularities in the edges of the umbra. AR13686 could be seen as a spot with two small umbrae within a shared penumbra. An arc of pores lies off its SE side. Across the CLM in the SE quadrant I could see AR13689 as three small spots for certain. There may be a fourth, a pore very near the lead spot at 50x. The GONG BBSO WLAI supports this observation.

I could see the granulation texturing of the photosphere but not really well.

James
